PREP WRESTLING: Marshall earns sweep against Waseca, Windom/Mountain Lake

MARSHALL -- After spending the first couple of weeks of the season on the road, the Marshall wrestling team finally got to experience a home meet. With an energized crowd behind them, Marshall cruised to a pair of victories on Friday, defeating Waseca 57-17 and Windom/Mountain Lake Area 50-18.
Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said he was pleased with how his team responded after a tough match earlier in the week and brought a lot of energy throughout the night.
"Overall, the team wrestled really well. We got two key victories here after taking a couple of lumps on Tuesday and we needed to regroup," coach Bouwman said. "The boys did a really nice job across the board with regrouping and putting everything out there; I thought we came out with a lot more energy and it was exciting to watch. There were some really tight matches and it was fun wrestling."
Marshall 57, Waseca 17
Opening the meet against Waseca, Marshall and the Bluejays split the first four bouts, with Drew Chandler winning by forfeit and Brett Regnier earning a pin to make it 12-9 before Dylan Louwagie won by forfeit to push Marshall's lead to 18-9. Waseca battled back, though, winning two of the next three bouts to cut the deficit to 24-17, but Marshall had a timely response. Lucas Stelter and Mitchell Bouwman both won by forfeit before Cole Felcyn got a 9-4 decision victory at 182 pounds to push Marshall's lead to 39-17. The Tigers weren't done there, with Spencer Wambeke and Keiton Walerius earning pins while Grant Louwagie won by forfeit to help seal the 57-17 victory.

Mountain Lake Area 18
After Waseca and Windom/MLA battled each other, Marshall took on the Cobras, who were fresh off a 53-27 victory over the Bluejays. This time, Marshall jumped out to a quick start, as Landon Marthaler and Chandler won by decision while Regnier and Dylan Louwagie won by pin to help them build an 18-3 lead. Windom/MLA wouldn't go down without a fight, however, with the Cobras winning the next two bouts to cut the deficit to 18-12, but Marshall answered with three straight bout victories, including a decision win by Tate Condezo and back-to-back pins by Josh Kraft and Tucker Fiene that pushed their lead to 33-12.
The Cobras would get a pin at 182 pounds, but Marshall got a tech fall from Wambeke and a pin from Grant Louwagie to earn the 50-18 victory.
Coach Bouwman said their key in both matches were being aggressive right from the start and attacking their opponents, particularly in the Windom match.
"I think we were aggressive and stayed active all of the time. We didn't sit back and wait for them, we went forward," coach Bouwman said. "Windom's got a solid team and I can't say enough about those guys, they keep plugging out good teams year after year and it's always a battle with us and those are the kinds of duals we need."

Marshall will compete next on Thursday against Fairmont/Martin County West at home at 6 p.m. Coach Bouwman said they need to continue to stay aggressive and motivated, especially with a challenging stretch of duals ahead of them.
"I think we need to keep pushing our aggressiveness and the tempo," coach Bouwman said. "Keep our kids hungry, keep them wanting to go get more and push themselves. We've got four huge duals next week, so we'll really find out where we're at."
