PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall girls basketball takes down Worthington 58-46 to begin the season

WORTHINGTON — The Marshall girls basketball team opened its season with a 58-46 victory over Worthington on Saturday.

Jordyn Hilgemann led Marshall with 23 points while Bri Simpson added 12 and Emily Meier recorded six. Corrin Naughton led in rebounds with six while Abby Wendorff led in assists with four.

Marshall (1-0) will face Windom Area on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Minneota 70,

MACCRAY 38

MINNEOTA — The Minneota girls basketball team defeated MACCRAY 70-38 in its season opener on Saturday.

Ireland Stassen led Minneota with 25 points while Abby Hennen and Natalee Rolbiecki each added 13 and Abby Rost had 10. Abby Hennen also led in rebounds and assists with 10 and five, respectively.

Minneota (1-0) will face RCW today at 7:15 p.m.

WWG 42,

Edgerton 39

WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team defeated Edgerton 42-39 to open the season on Saturday.

Bethany Byers led WWG with 12 points while Abby Wiggins added 10 and Isabel and Olivia Klumper each recorded six. No other stats were available at press time.

WWG (1-0) will face HLO/Fulda on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Sleepy Eye

St. Mary’s 83,

Wabasso 55

WABASSO — The Wabasso girls basketball team fell to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 83-55 to open the season on Saturday.

Sarah Franta led Wabasso with 17 points while Madeline Hanna added 12 and Kelsey Frank had nine. Ashlyn Daub led in rebounds with seven while Avery Carlson led in assists with four.

Wabasso (0-1) will face GFW on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

YME 67, CMCS 58

PRINSBURG — The Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team defeated Central Minnesota Christian 67-58 in its season opener on Saturday.

Shelby Mortenson led YME with 20 points while Ruby Bones, Hannah Stark and Brylea Ruff each added 12. Mortenson also led in rebounds with 14 while Stark led in assists with six.

YME (1-0) will face RCW on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Boys basketball

Minneota 75,

DB 70

MINNEOTA — The Minneota boys basketball team defeated Dawson-Boyd 75-70 in its season opener on Saturday.

Jacob Hennen led Minneota with 24 points and also passed 1,000 points for his career while Jacob Citterman added 16, AJ Josephson had 14, Bishop Drietz had 11 and Cale Sorenson had 10. No other stats were available at press time.

Gauge Liebl led Dawson-Boyd with 24 points while Keegon Wicht added 14, Zeke Sather had 12 and Micah Olson had 11. Sather led in rebounds with eight while Wicht led in assists with five.

Minneota (1-0) will face KMS on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. while DB (0-1) will face YME on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

TMB 57,

Lakeview 49

TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team defeated Lakeview 57-49 in its season opener on Saturday.

Tony Nelson led TMB with 21 points while Christian Wendland added 14 and Jake Turner had 11. Turner led in rebounds with 10 while Wendland led in assists with four.

Nathan Fenske led Lakeview with 14 points while Colby Marczak and Owen Louwagie each added 10 and Ethan Schwankl had eight. Marczak led in rebounds with five while Fenske led in assists with three.

TMB (1-0) will face MACCRAY on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. while Lakeview will face RCW on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

CMCS 71, YME 30

GRANITE FALLS — The Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team fell to Central Minnesota Christian 71-30 in its season opener on Saturday.

Caleb Jans led YME with eight points while Silas Whitebuffalo added seven and Kyle Chase recorded six. Landon Anderson led in rebounds with five while Cody Dahlager led in assists with four.

YME (0-1) will face Dawson-Boyd on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Girls hockey

Marshall 8, Waseca 0

WASECA — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Waseca 8-0 in its season opener on Saturday.

Marshall jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to Aubree Metheny’s first varsity goal on the assist from Kaitlyn Timm and Shelby Ormberg 1:25 into the game before pushing its lead to 2-0 a few minutes later on a goal from Tessa Gannott on the assist by Timm. Near the midway point of the first period, Kalyn DeVlieger made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal.

Marshall kept up the offense in the second frame, getting a goal by Leah Schaefer on the assist from Emelia Barker before Timm found the back of the net a minute later to make it 5-0. Barker then got a shot past the goaltender with 10 minutes left in the second to give Marshall a 6-0 lead after two.

Marshall wasn’t done there, as it scored two more times in the third. Lily Verkinderen scored her first varsity goal before Schaefer found the back of the net again to bring it to the 8-0 final.

Emma Klenken earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 10 saves.

Marshall (1-0) will face Waseca again today at 4 p.m.

Boys hockey

Waseca 7,

Marshall 3

WASECA — The Marshall boys hockey team fell to Waseca 7-3 in its season opener on Saturday.

Marshall got on the board with a goal from Logan Deutz on the assist from Justin Cavazos to tie things up at 1-1 with 5:50 left in the first period, but Waseca answered with a goal to take a 2-1 lead after one.

The Bluejays then scored a trio of goals in the second period while Marshall got a goal from Jared Reinsma on the assist by Braxton Meyer to make it 5-2 in favor of Waseca. Marshall did get another goal from Reinsma in the third on the assist from Gabe Sherman and Gavin Welsh, but Waseca added two more scores to its total to earn the 7-3 win.

Welsh recorded 28 saves in net for Marshall.

Marshall (0-1) will face Waseca again today at 6 p.m.
