MARSHALL — The Marshall girls swim and dive team held its second home invite of the season, facing a team it had not competed against. That didn’t stop Marshall from continuing to show its strength between the lanes as they were able to earn a 95-68 victory over Tri-City United on Friday on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.

Marshall coach Nikki Axe-Bell said they moved some athletes around in their events and she was pleased with the overall performance from them.

“Our big focus was showcasing our seniors and this was our second home meet, so I moved some girls around and looked at some swims that I wasn’t able to see yet from some girls and diversify the athletes that way,” coach Bell said. “It was nice to have a team come out to Marshall that we haven’t seen before, so we were pleased with them and it was a nice matchup and we appreciate them being willing to come out because that’s not always easy to get people to travel. All around, I had some girls that stepped up and had some of their best times; I was trying to keep us focused on the density of our training as we step into swimming against St. Peter next week and then our conference championship on Oct. 10. Just trying to do some speed checks and see where we are at.”

In the 200-yard medley relay, the Marshall team of Mansi Bell, Maddie Larson, Hailey Brandt and Kaylie Stucke took first with a time of 2:02.70 while the team of Alex Larson, Autumn Deutz, Reagan Brandt and Paige Milstead took second with a time of 2:17.24. In the 200-yard freestyle, Alana Condezo took first with a time of 2:13.42, followed by Emma Beavers in second with a time of 2:15.49 and Tera Johnson in third with a time of 2:15.54. In the 200-yard individual medley, Hailey Brandt took first with a time of 2:24.26 while Maddie Larson took second (2:28.87) and Alli Kopitski took third (2:34.52).

In the 50-yard freestyle, Clara Bader took second with a time of 26.61 seconds while Alex Larson took third with a time of 28.04 seconds and Autumn Deutz took fourth with a time of 28.49 seconds. In the 1-meter dive, Reagan Brandt took first with a score of 159 while Bader took second (158.35) and Brooklyn Gossen took third (146.60). In the 100-yard butterfly, Hailey Brandt took first with a time of 1:03.01 while Condezo took second with a time of 1:09.20 and Mansi Bell took third with a time of 1:10.37.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Holly Netzley took second with a time of 1:03.13 while Gossen took third with a time of 1:06.41 and Elizabeth Coudron took fourth with a time of 1:07.49. In the 500-yard freestyle, Stucke took first with a time of 5:39.58 while Kopitski took second with a time of 5:54.74 and Reagan Brandt took third with a time of 6:10.36 to round out the scoring.

Saluting the seniors

Before the meet, Marshall honored its two seniors on the team: Stucke and Jessica Wyffels. Coach Bell said both have done so much for their program both in and away from the water throughout their time and they’ll be dearly missed.

“They’ve both provided so much phenomenal leadership and they will be dearly missed. Kaylie is a five-time recipient of the hardest worker award and you will not meet someone who’s earned it more. She’s always done everything after practice, she’s never missed a swim practice, she keeps herself healthy and does above and beyond extra practices on her own time as well. That humble leadership and willingness to swim whatever is asked of her has been tremendous,” coach Bell said. “Jessica is the most spirited athlete and a hard worker as well; she’s the first to cheer, the first to have a positive statement, the first person to make sure the bus is clean and that we are representing ourselves well. She’s just a tremendous advocate for our team and very positive. They will be dearly missed athletes and they provide a lot of great leadership for our program.”
