MARSHALL — The MAYBA Huskies and Ducks battled things out on Thursday evening for the College League in-house championship at the Marshall High School fields. It was an extremely back-and-forth affair with lots of offense, but in the end, it was the Huskies who emerged victorious with an 11-10 win and seal their undefeated season with a championship.

The Huskies jumped out to a strong lead in the first, as Nolan Deutz and Max Weedman connected on singles before back-to-back RBI singles by Mauer Leysen and Alex Reaves made it 2-0. The Huskies then added a pair of runs on a groundout and a fielder’s choice to push their advantage to 4-0 after one.

The Ducks had a response, though in the next half-inning, as Graem Bly and Blaise Mathiowetz got consecutive base hits before an RBI single by Decker Kerkaert got them on the board. A couple of batters later, Gavin Schrier smacked a single that plated two more runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Huskies continued to find offense, however, using base hits by Mason Moua and Brayson Ritter and a fielder’s choice by Liam Deutz to load the bases with no outs before Nolan Deutz and Leysen connected on run-scoring hits to make it 7-3.

The Ducks continued to battle, as Kaden Boeck and Kellen Drake reached before RBI singles by Archer Rignell and Bly brought it to a two-run game at 7-5 after three. The Ducks weren’t done there, with Ty Stelter getting aboard with a one-out single in the fourth before base hits by Paul Monsen Jr. and Charlie Grannes made it 7-6. Jonathon Sternke then reached on a fielder’s choice to score more runs and give them an 8-7 lead.

But the Huskies came right back with another timely answer, using a two-out double by Nolan Deutz before Weedman and Leysen connected on base hits that plated three runs to put the Huskies back in front at 10-8 after four.

The Ducks wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, as Drake led things off with a single in the fifth before Rignell connected on a double. Bly then lined a double of his own to score both runners and tie things up at 10-10. The Huskies made one last push on offense, though, getting a single from Kyler Brinkman and an RBI single from Moua to make it 11-10, before getting a scoreless top of the sixth to seal the victory and take home the championship.

The Huskies were sponsored by Bremer Bank and were coached by Nathan Deutz and Brady Webb. The Ducks were sponsored by Van Der Hagen, Skogrand & Associates and were coached by Derek Rignell, Ryan Sirovy and Chad Drake.
