Strong start carries Springfield past Yankees

SPRINGFIELD — The Milroy Yankees amateur baseball team fell to Springfield 11-1 in seven innings on Tuesday.

The Yankees got the scoring started in the top half of the first, but the rest of the game was controlled by the Tigers. Springfield scored four runs in bottom of the first before adding four more in the second to take the lead and never look back.

Cody Greve led the way for the Yankees with a 2 for 3 day at the plate while Andy Schmidt, Cory Apperson and Eric Dolan each added a hit and Matt Bauer recorded an RBI.

Ty Kemp took the loss on the mound for Milroy, going 1 1/3 innings while allowing six runs on four hits. Isaac Schmitt tossed 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out four.

The Yankees (7-2-1) will face Heron Lake next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
