SMSU WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: Mustangs push win streak to five with three wins in Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team extended its winning streak to five in a row earning three victories at the University of Illinois Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.

SMSU, which improves to 13-9 overall, defeated the University of Illinois 65-43 on Friday, before defeating Auburn University (80-52) and Edinboro University (61-52) on Saturday.

In the win on Friday over Illinois, Walter Johnson scored a team-high 23 points and was one of four Mustangs to reach double figures in scoring. Jesus Villa (14), Ryan Kile (10) and Ezekiel Ramudzi (10) all hit double figures in scoring.

Villa had a monster game in the win over Auburn, pouring in 37 points on 17 of 29 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers. Johnson also had a strong game scoring 25 points on 12 of 18 shooting. The Mustangs shot 65 percent (37 of 57) from the field in the victory.

In the weekend finale versus Edinboro, Johnson made 9 of 13 field goals to finish with a team-high 18 points. Will Glendenning came through with a strong game scoring 12 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field.

SMSU will have its final regular season games of the season on March 7 hosting Sioux Falls and then taking on the SMSU Alumni inside the PE Gym. The Mustangs will compete at the NIWBT Championships on March 18-21 in Wichita, Kan.
