PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Saphi, Cameen McFarquhar earn trips to state; Tigers place sixth at section meet

WORTHINGTON — The Marshall gymnastics team competed in the Section 3A meet Saturday, coming in sixth out of eight teams with a score of 126.575. Worthington (142) and Redwood Valley (134) took the top two spots to earn a trip to the state tournament as a team.

While the Tigers didn’t reach state as a group, they will still be represented at the Class A meet next weekend. Saphi McFarquhar will be making her third consecutive appearance at state after earning a third-place finish in the all-around with a score of 35.600. She placed first on the balance beam (9.175) and the uneven bars (8.875) while also recording scores of 8.925 in the floor exercise and an 8.625 on vault.

Joining Saphi at state will be her younger sister Cameen, who is making her first trip after recording an all-around score of 33.375 and tying for fifth. Cameen added scores of 8.950 on beam, 8.550 on both vault and floor and a 7.325 on bars.

“I’m really proud of all of the girls for stepping up,” Marshall coach Larvita McFarquhar said. “Saphi was able to get back to doing all-around again and she stepped up for her team and did her best even though she hasn’t been practicing all of the events all season. They all worked on bigger skills to give themselves a chance to make it to state.”

Coach McFarquhar added it’s going to be special to be able to watch Saphi and Cameen compete alongside each other at the biggest stage.

“It’s going to be great for them to be with one another and lift each other up,” coach McFarquhar said. “To be able to represent Marshall like this is a great thing.”

Adding to the Marshall effort was Leah Matzner with scores of 8.525 on vault and 6.050 on beam while Kaylee VanHauwaert had a 6.800 and Hailey Hinze had a 6.200 on bars, respectively. Reeanna Hansen had an 8.100 on vault, Sydney Brandt had a 6.150 on bars, Reagan Brandt had a 6.700 on beam and a 7.325 on floor, Clara Bader had an 8.300 on vault, 5.950 on beam and 7.700 on floor and Jocelyn Schlenner had a 6.725 on floor as well for the Tigers.

The Class A individual and all-around meet will be held on Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. in the Maturi Pavilion at the University of Minnesota.
