SMSU WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: Mustangs win twice Saturday to finish weekend 2-2
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball earned a pair of victories on Saturday to finishing the two-day University of Missouri Tournament with a 2-2 record.
SMSU opened the weekend on Friday with losses to Missouri, 60-57 and Arizona, 75-63. On Saturday, SMSU rebounded with a 70-44 win over Edinboro, before closing the day with a 65-56 victory over Missouri.
SMSU is now 6-7 overall and will return to action on Jan. 17-18, 2020, at the Nebraska Omaha Tournament.
In Friday’s loss to Missouri, Walter Johnson scored a game-high 26 points on 12 of 19 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Jesus Villa added 15 points with six field goals, while Ezekiel Ramudzi was a perfect 5 of 5 from the field and chipped in with 10 points.
In the setback to Arizona, the Mustangs shot just 36 percent from the field and were just 9 of 19 from the free throw line. Villa had a big game scored 34 points on 11 of 30 shooting with five 3-pointers. Johnson connected 10 of 23 field goals to score a 22 points.
Despite the two losses on Friday, SMSU bounced back on Saturday morning with a big victor over Edinboro. Johnson poured in 28 points on 13 of 15 shooting. Ramudzi added 11 points, while Ryan Kile chipped in with nine points on 4 of 5 shooting.
In the final game of the weekend, SMSU shot 49 percent from the field in earning the rematch victory over Missouri. Villa led a balanced SMSU attack with 22 points, with Johnson added 19 points and Kile finishing with 14.
