PREP WRESTLING: Holding it down at home

No. 4 Marshall cruises past Fulda/MCC, Adrian in home opener

MARSHALL — After getting its season started with a pair of strong performances, the No. 4 Marshall wrestling team returned home to a roaring Tiger fanbase ready to see its program in action.

The Tigers delivered with a couple of dominant victories, rolling past Fulda/MCC 82-0 before taking down Adrian Area 47-30 on Thursday night.

Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said he was pleased with their overall effort and felt his team came out ready to go against some solid competitors.

“Overall, we’re ready. Our kids went out and wrestled really hard; both teams are good, they’re building and in the stages that we were in a few years ago with rebuilding things and putting things back together,” coach Bouwman said. “They are some solid teams and they’ve got some solid kids and it’s a lot of fun to see.”

Coach Bouwman added it was nice to finally be back home and wrestle in front of their home crowd.

“Just getting back home and having a chance to wrestle two duals in front of the home crowd with all of the support we had, it’s really awesome and the kids really look forward to it,” coach Bouwman said.

Marshall 82, Fulda/MCC 0

After Fulda/MCC fell to Adrian Area to begin the triangular, the Warriors turned around to face the Tigers. Marshall took command of the dual early and never looked back, as the Tigers were victorious in every matchup.

Brett Regnier and Dylan Louwagie got things started with pins over Fulda/MCC’s Denver Ash and Aiden Lorenzen, respectively, in 22 seconds each before Hsa Khee Lar, Hsa Law Eh, Conner Roth, Noah Blomme and Mitchell Bouwman all won by forfeit to give Marshall a 42-0 lead. After Tucker Fiene defeated Fulda/MCC’s Kadin Kuehl by major decision (13-0) at the 152-weight class, Marshall picked up pins in the next five weight classes from Noah Jensen (1:08), Ilija Milanovic (0:26), Grant Louwagie (1:22), Cole Felcyn (0:26) and Jaiden Bahr (0:26) before Jackson Vierstraete won by forfeit to seal the 82-0 shutout win for the Tigers.

Looking to keep its momentum rolling, Marshall got out to a solid start against Adrian Area with pins from Regnier (1:45), Dylan Louwagie (3:00) and Hsa Khee Lar (0:59) to go along with a major decision from Hsa Law Eh (12-1) and another pin by Roth (4:32) to give Marshall a 28-0 advantage.

But Adrian Area wouldn’t go down without a fight, though, as the Dragons took four of the next five weight classes by pin to cut the deficit to 32-24. Marshall responded by getting a key decision victory from Grant Louwagie (4-0) and back-to-back pins by Felcyn (0:25) and Bahr (0:54) to push the Tigers lead to 47-24 before a pin victory for Adrian in the 285-weight class closed out the scoring at 47-30.

Coach Bouwman said their key throughout the meet was being aggressive early and looking to pin in order to maximize their scoring.

“I think our kids went out and went to pin,” coach Bouwman said. “Our kids look to pin, they want to score big team points, they want to help their teammates out and just be agressive the whole time.”

Achieving a

milestone

Just as it has within the first couple of meets, Marshall would witness a pair of milestones be reached, as Grant Louwagie earned his 75th career victory while Bahr set the program record for most pins with his 79th against Adrian Area’s Jaren Winselman.

Coach Bouwman said it’s always special to see those milestones be met and added the amount of hard work and dedication they put in to reach them makes it even more worthwhile.

“It’s so exciting to see those milestones. Those kids put in so much time and so much work and so much effort to reaching those goals,” coach Bouwman said. “Grant’s been wrestling a long time to get to that 75 and he’s put in blood, sweat and tears into helping us build this program to where it’s at. Same thing with Jaiden, he’s wrestled a lot of matches for a long time when he was a young kid, and now to be able to put his name at the top of the board, it’s pretty exciting to see.”

Up next

Marshall will compete on Dec. 20-21 at the Redwood Riots Invite. Coach Bouwman said they have a few things to work on before they head into one of their bigger meets of the season.

“We’ve got a few little things to work on before we get to the Redwood Riot,” coach Bouwman said. “Just little things on the mat like our positioning and knowing where we’re at and just slowing our bodies down. Sometimes you get too ramped up and we try to do things way too fast and we lose control of what we’re trying to do.”
