PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall opens season with 61-51 victory against Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON — Opening a new season, it’s not unheard of to see sloppy play and foul-filled games. That’s what happened on Tuesday night at Whalen Gymnasium in Hutchinson, as the Hutchinson and Marshall girls basketball teams combined for 45 personal fouls and 36 turnovers.

In the end, it was the No. 10-ranked Marshall Tigers that made enough plays down the stretch to defeat the Hutchinson Tigers 61-51.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Marshall coach Dan Westby said after the win. “Both teams pressed. There were a lot of fouls in the game, which not uncommon for first games. The girls fought hard, battled through and made free throws in the clutch.”

It was a balanced scoring effort for Marshall, as four players ended the night with double-digit points. Lenei Estrada led Marshall with 13 points, and Westby noted that her play against the press was key to the win.

“Lenei was able to break pressure and provide open looks after getting through,” Westby said.

Paige Andries added 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win, while Jordyn Hilgemann tallied 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Emily Meier was the fourth player in double digits with 10 points.

Marshall (1-0) will host New Ulm on Friday.
