SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Mustangs cruise to 76-50 victory over Ouachita Baptist Ark.

WICHITA, Kan. – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s basketball team (2-0) finished the opening weekend with a 76-50 victory over Ouachita Baptist (0-2) on Saturday morning in the Fugate Gymnasium, as a part of the Clarion Inn Central Region Challenge, hosted by Newman University

Meleah Reinhart led the Mustangs to 43 percent shooting (27 of 63) and 33 percent from the 3-point line (6 of 18) as she finished with a team-high 18 points. SMSU’s Abuk Akoi and Jenna Borchers added double-figures to aid the victory with Akoi finishing with 12 and Borchers with 13. Erin Baxter led the team in rebounding with seven and added nine points.

SMSU held OUA to 31 percent shooting from the field (18 of 59) and 13 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 16) to allow only two made 3-pointers.

SMSU had an explosive two first quarters, finishing with 20-points in each, 23 in the first and 26 in the second to go into halftime with a 49-25 advantage.

The Mustangs took advantage of the paint with a 42 to 28 advantage, as 12 of the points game from second chance shots and 10 were off fast breaks.

OUA was led in scoring by Jakyya Clay who led the team with 12 points.

Southwest Minnesota State (2-0) will open the home season on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. versus Presentation College (S.D.) in the R/A Facility.
