WORTHINGTON — Since opening the season with a five-set thrilling win in Willmar, the Marshall Tigers volleyball team has dominated its competition.

In fact, No. 1 seed Marshall entered Tuesday night’s Section 3AA semifinal match against No. 2 seed Jackson County Central on a 50-set winning streak in best-of-five matches.

JCC snapped Marshall’s streak in the first set, but Marshall took the final three sets of the match to earn a 3-0 (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20) win and advance to the Section 3AA Championship.

Marshall volleyball coach Dan Westby was pleased with how his team looked in Set 1, despite JCC taking the set.

“In Set 1, we didn’t play bad,” Westby said. “We had a couple leads at 10-6 and 18-15. We committed three or four errors in a row and, to JCC’s credit, they took advantage.”

Westby was pleased with the performances of seniors Logan Sherman and Paige Andries at the net, as well as junior Emily Meier. Sherman led the Tigers with 17 kills along with 27 set assists. Meier added 16 kills in the win while Paige Andries finished with 12 kills.

Jordyn Hilgemann chipped in with 14 kills and 19 digs, while Mia Schnaible led the Tigers defense with 25 digs.

With the win, Marshall (27-5) advances to Saturday night’s Section 3AA Championship, with the opening serve scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Tigers are looking for their third consecutive section championship. Marshall has won 16 of the last 18 Section 3AA titles, with the lone exceptions being the two years Marshall spent as a Class AAA program.

Meeting the Tigers out of the North subsection will be No. 6-seeded Minnewaska Area, which defeated top-seeded New London-Spicer 3-0 on Thursday and hasn’t dropped a set in section play.

Despite the low seed of the opponent, Westby isn’t looking past the Lakers.

“They’re a team on a roll right now,” Westby said. “We don’t know much about them yet, but they’re probably playing their best volleyball of the season right now.”
