SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU earns No. 15 spot in latest AVCA Top 25 poll

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team maintains a spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Division II weekly poll at the No. 15 spot, released on Monday afternoon.

SMSU opened the season at the Keweenaw Classic hosted by Michigan Tech in Houghton, Mich. The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Michigan Tech, to then go for three consecutive victories to close out the weekend.

SMSU’s right-side hitter, Meg Schmidt, was named to the Keweenaw Classic All-Tournament team after finishing the weekend leading the team in kills with 29. She had three matches with double-digit kills, capped off with 19 kills and a .395 hitting percentage with a 3-1 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.

SMSU is one four NSIC schools ranked in the top-25 with Minnesota Duluth leading the way at No. 6. Northern State at No. 7, Concordia-St. Paul at No. 10, and SMSU at No. 15.

SMSU has now been ranked in the Top 25 for 177 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have been ranked among the Top 10 for 79 consecutive polls.

Southwest Minnesota State travels to the Colorado Premier Challenge on Friday to kick off the tournament with pool-play versus Tarleton State (Texas) at 12 p.m. and MSU Denver at 7 p.m.
