SMSU VOLLEYBALL: Mustang volleyball moves to No. 9 in AVCA national poll

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team moved up six spots to No. 9 in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Division II weekly poll released on Monday afternoon.

SMSU, 6-2 overall, is coming off a 3-1 weekend at the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver, advancing to the championship match before losing 3-1 to conference rival Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday night.

SMSU has been ranked in the Top 25 for 178 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006.

SMSU is one eight NSIC schools ranked in this week’s Top 25 with Minnesota Duluth leading the way at No. 4. Concordia-St. Paul is ranked No. 6, followed by Northern State at No. 8, SMSU at No. 9, St. Cloud State at No. 19, Wayne State at No. 20, Sioux Falls at No. 24 and Upper Iowa at No. 25.

Southwest Minnesota State opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this weekend with two matches in the state of North Dakota. SMSU takes on UMary (1-7) on Friday starting at 6 p.m., before facing Minot State (0-8) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

SMSU will have its first home match of the season at the PE Gym on Friday, Sept. 27.
