SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU ranks No. 9 in preseason AVCA poll

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team opens the 2019 season ranked No. 9 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Preseason Poll released on Tuesday, marking the program’s 11th consecutive season beginning the year ranked in the Top 10.

SMSU rounds out the four NSIC schools ranked in the AVCA Top 25 with Concordia-St. Paul (931) leading the way at the No. 5 spot, Minnesota Duluth (905) placing at the No. 6 spot, and Northern State (790) at No. 8.

SMSU, which finished with an overall record of 23-9, closed the 2018 season with a No. 8 ranking. SMSU has now been ranked in the Top 25 for 176 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have been ranked among the Top 10 for 79 consecutive polls.

The Mustangs opened practice on Monday and will begin the new season on Sept. 5-7 at the Michigan Tech Classic facing Michigan Tech in the season opener on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
