SLAYTON – Over the past two seasons, the Murray County Central volleyball team been a force to be reckoned with in the Red Rock Conference with back to back top-three finishes in the 11-team field. With six seniors leading the way for this season, the Rebels may be on their way to a conference title and perhaps even the program’s first-ever trip to the state tournament.

The talented senior class is highlighted by All-Conference team member Alyssa Groves, as well as Brianna Schmitz, Shelby Christensen and Bryn Hoekman. Fifth-year head coach Katie DeLong is hopeful that the group will step up as team leaders to help guide newcomers to the team like Emily Rohrer.

“We have a few experienced players returning,” said DeLong. “My hope is that they continue to be team leaders and use their experience to (continue) building a successful program.”

So far in practice, DeLong has been trying out different rotations in order to put together the best combination of players on the floor.

“(Right now) we’re trying out new rotations, (and) focusing on putting the most successful team on the court.”

The Rebels are scheduled to open up the regular season with a non-conference matchup with the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Dawson. DeLong is hoping to get the season started off on the right foot in order to reach their goals of a conference title and a trip to state.

“Our girls are always looking for the conference title and possible state appearance,” said DeLong. “With determination and hard work I believe our girls can achieve these goals.”
