SMSU BASEBALL: SMSU’s Bezdicek selected for Northwoods League Major League Dreams Showcase

ROCHESTER -Southwest Minnesota State University left-handed pitcher John Bezdicek was selected to participant in the Northwoods League Major League Dreams Showcase the league announced on Monday. The event will be hosted by the Madison Mallards on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Warner Park in Madison, Wis.

The annual Showcase will consist of a doubleheader featuring the top players from the Northwoods League who were selected by a panel of Major League Baseball Scouts. The players will participate in a day of workouts in front of scouts which will be followed by the doubleheader.

Bezdicek, who pitches for the Willmar Stingers, is one of only two players from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference selected for the Showcase. He’ll compete with a team featuring a mix of Great Plains Division players from Willmar, St. Cloud, Bismarck and Duluth.

A native of Plymouth, Bezdicek appeared in 10 games with eight starts and registered two complete games and a pair of victories for the Mustangs this spring. He recorded a 4.18 ERA in a team-high 51 2/3 innings with a team-high 57 strikeouts. Bezdicek pitched at least 5 2/3 innings in seven starts and recorded six or more strikeouts in five starts. He was named NSIC Pitcher of the Week on April 2 following a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts at Upper Iowa and tossed a season-high 8 1/3 shutout innings with nine strikeouts at UMary. Bezdicek ranked ninth in the NSIC in innings pitched (46) and fifth in strikeouts (52).

Bezdicek has been used as both a starter and relief pitcher this summer for Willmar. He has recorded a 3-2 mark with one save in 10 appearances including six starts. He has struck out 40 batters and walked 17 in 36 1/3 innings.
