AREA BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Mudcats place second at Princeton tournament

PRINCETON — Marshall advanced all the way to the championship game of the 50th annual Princeton American Legion Baseball Tournament on Sunday before losing 4-1 to Grand Rapids.

The Marshall bats were held in check all game, as the Mudcats recorded just three hits in the loss. Cody Greve went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Isaac Schmitt added a double.

Greve took the loss on the mound, striking out three batters and allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Marshall will open Sub-State 15 Tournament play Wednesday in Waconia against host Waconia, with first pitch set for 7 p.m.

PRINCETON — Marshall defeated Robbinsdale Armstrong 5-1 on Saturday.

Isaac Schmitt led the Marshall offense, going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.

Nick Macchio went 2 for 4 with a double in the win, while Jackson Hughes tripled and scored two runs for the Mudcats.

Logan Terfehr pitched the complete game and struck out eight batters in the win.

RAYMOND – The Marshall amateur baseball team fell to Raymond 5-0 to wrap up the regular season on Sunday.

Ryan VanMoer, Zach Olson, Ryan Schwagel, Alex Thompson, Logan Tomasek and Braden Meyer led the way for Marshall with a hit apiece.

Tomasek took the loss on the mound, going five innings while allowing five runs on seven hits.

Marshall (13-6) earned the No. 3 seed in the Region 4C playoffs and will face the No. 6 seed on Saturday in Bird Island at 2:30 p.m.

HADLEY — The Hadley Buttermakers clinched a spot in the Region 13C Tournament with a 15-5 win over Heron Lake in seven innings on Sunday in Game 2 of a best-of-three series.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed due to poor field conditions.

The Buttermakers scored 9 runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory, while Blake Rogers added a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Region 13C Tournament action will begin on Wednesday night, with tournament seedings to be decided tonight.

Spicer 4, Milroy Yankees 3

SPICER — The Spicer Twins defeated the Milroy Yankees 4-3 in extra innings on Saturday.

The Yankees had a 3-1 lead entering the ninth inning, but couldn’t hold on for the win.

Milroy recorded 15 hits in the loss, led by a four-hit performance from Derek Rasmussen.

Zach Felcyn got the start and allowed just one run over six innings.

Region 4C Tournament action begins next weekend.
