LEGION BASEBALL: Marshall, Milroy to host annual Wood Bat Classic

MARSHALL – The Marshall Legion baseball team, along with several other teams, will participate in the 19th annual Wood Bat Classic this weekend.

Marshall Legion, Marshall Junior Legion, Willmar, Albany, BOLD, Rosemount and the Minneapolis Lakers will all compete in the round-robin tournament over the next three days, with games being held at Legion Field in Marshall and Irish Yard in Milroy.

Marshall Legion coach Mitch Maxwell said the tournament wouldn’t be possible without the continued support from U.S. Bank, the Legion association and parents who help volunteer.

“It takes a lot of effort, especially from our parent reps behind the scenes getting everything organized in terms of the schedule and the parent workers,” Maxwell said. “We’re always thankful for those people and their efforts and then we continue to get support from U.S. Bank year after year so we really appreciate that as well as from the American Legion in town. They continue to be a sponsor and we can’t thank them enough for the things they’ve been able to do and they continue to help us out financially, so both of those entities have played a big role in being able to continue to hold this as well as the parent reps and the Legion board.”

The tournament will also some new teams, including Rosemount and BOLD.

“We were fortunate to get Rosemount to come out from the Twin Cities, so that’s a new team that’ll be coming in this year,” Maxwell said. “We also got BOLD into the tournament this year and they just ended and wrapped up a state championship against New York Mills, but they’re willing to come back and play, so they’ll open their series on Saturday in pool play. So those are two teams that we’re looking forward to coming into the Classic this year.”

Cost is $3 per day for ages 12-17 and $5 per day for adults. Under 11 yeards old is free. Maxwell said he’s looking forward to seeing the cohesiveness they saw from the high school season as well as having some of the younger players step into some new roles this summer.

“I think the biggest thing I’m looking forward to this year is we were able to make the state tournament in the spring and there are a few seniors that aren’t playing and some that are and we’re thankful for their leadership but we also have some guys that are going to get an opportunity to play,” Maxwell said. “They’ll maybe play some different positions but I’m looking forward to that development piece as well as having a strong group of senior leaders to go with that. I’m really looking forward to those two pieces coming to work together like it did in the spring, but there are going to be some guys that are going to have some opportunities that maybe didn’t have in the spring.”
