AMATEUR BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Marshall holds on late against Sacred Heart

SACRED HEART — The Marshall A’s fended off a late rally to defeat the Sacred Heart Saints 5-4 on Wednesday.

Marshall scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning for a four-run cushion, but Sacred Heart fought back to score one run in the eighth and two in the ninth. Sacred Heart left eight runners on base in the loss.

Mason Schnaible earned the win on the mound. In 8 1/3 innings, he allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with 10 strikeouts and just one walk issued. Zach Olson recorded the game’s final two outs to earn the save.

Schnaible was also the top hitter for the A’s on Wednesday, going 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.

A’s manager Ryan Schwagel went 2 for 4 with two RBI in the win.

Marshall (5-1, 4-0 Corn Belt) will travel down Highway 68 to face the Milroy Yankees on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Milroy Irish 8, Ruthton 0

MILROY — The Milroy Irish used sound pitching and timely hitting to defeat Ruthton 8-0 on Wednesday.

Kenny Morris went seven innings on the mound and struck out nine Royals to earn the victory.

Tyler Peterson led the Irish offense, going 2 for 4 with three RBI. Dominic Dolan and Derek Riley added a pair of hits apiece in the win.

Nathan Roeder went 2 for 4 to lead Ruthton.
