SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: Mustangs record strong finishes in Sioux Falls and Mankato
MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s and men’s track & field teams had athletes compete in both Sioux Fall, S.D., and Mankato, the past two days in their final preparations to the NSIC Championships next weekend.
The SMSU men’s 4×400 relay team of Hever Valenzuela, Gabe Galamue, Quadri Busari and Kyle Felling highlighted action on Saturday at the Dakota Relays at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, running a school record 3:19.20 to win and defeating teams from Dakota State, South Dakota State, Augustana and Buena Vista.
The same four ran the 4×100 on Friday and finished second with a season-best time of 41.60.
Norah King finished seventh in the shot put at the Dakota Relays with a distance of 12.49m, while teammate Hailey Nierling was ninth in the hammer throw at 44.40m.
On Saturday at the Maverick Twilight in Mankato, Tina Saulsbury Triviski placed fifth in the javelin at 31.62, while Nierling placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.82m.
Ginny Pederson finished with a 11.29m mark in the triple jump to finish sixth and then went 5.18m mark in the long jump to finish ninth.
For the men’s team, Andrew Sandvold finished third in the javelin at 42.46m with teammate Calvin Knapp placing fourth at 42.40m.
Connor Wigand earned third place in the shot put with a distance of 15.46m and then finished fifth in the discus at 45.90m, while Adarius Gallon recorded a fifth place finish in the long jump at 6.73.
SMSU will compete at the annual NSIC Championships next Friday and Saturday in Duluth.
