SMSU ATHLETICS: SMSU’s Grote, Fleck to Google Cloud Academic All-District team

MARSHALL – A couple of Southwest Minnesota State University student-athletes were named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District team on Thursday: junior softball player Emma Grote and senior baseball player Jayden Fleck.

Emma Grote

Grote was one of five infielders named to the 12-member team from District 7, which is made up of schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), the Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC).

Grote is the first SMSU softball player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors since Amy Dreessen in 2013. She now advances to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, where first, second and third team All-Academic honorees will be selected next month. Dreessen, in 2013, is the lone SMSU softball player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.

A native of Blair, Neb., Grote has compiled a 3.98 cumulative GPA in exercise science. She started 38 games at first base, outfield and designated hitter this season and batted .341 with two triples, one double and one home run. She led the squad with 12 stolen bases and ranked second in runs scored (30) and was third in base hits (45). Grote finished with a .961 fielding percentage which included a team-high 189 putouts.

Grote has played and started 125 games in her three-year career and has compiled a .307 batting average with 74 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, two home runs and 24 stolen bases.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Google Cloud Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.

The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 DII and DIII Academic All-America teams.

Jayden Fleck

Fleck was one of four infielders named to the 11-member team from District 7, which is made up of schools from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), the Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC).

It’s the second straight season Fleck has earned Academic All-District honors and the 16th time the Mustang baseball program has had either a first or second team Academic All-District honoree since 2000.

Fleck, who was named a 2018 Google Cloud second team Academic All-American, will now advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, where first, second and third team All-Academic honorees will be selected next month.
