SMSU WRESTLING: UMary downs SMSU to conclude its dual season

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team concluded conference play with a 27-12 loss to UMary on Sunday afternoon.

SMSU (1-9, 1-8 NSIC) earned three bout victories while UMary (6-4, 4-4 NSIC) earned the other seven.

The dual began at 141 and it wasn’t until 157 when Cortez Arredondo maintained a perfect record in conference play with a decision victory over UMary’s Devin Steidler.

Kegen Fingalsen followed up Arredondo’s win with a win by fall at 4:05 to give SMSU a 9-6 lead. UMary then earned a major decision victory over Nick VonRuden to head into intermission with a 10-9 lead.

UMary’s Lance Jarrett returned from intermission to win by fall at 5:57 to extend the lead 16-9.

Griffin Osing gave SMSU its last attempt to cut the deficit with a decision victory over Ryan Stottler to come within four points at 16-12 before UMary would take the final three bouts for the victory.

Sunday’s dual was the final conference dual for SMSU seniors; Cortez Arredondo, Jordan Biehn, Kegen Fingalsen, Griffin Osing, Nick VonRuden, and Zach Beaumaster.

141: Hunter Eckert wins by decision (9-5) over Riley Altenburg. UMary 3, SMSU 0.

149: Max Bruss wins by decision (9-4) over Justin Haneke. UMary 6, SMSU 0.

157: Cortez Arredondo wins by decision (6-1) over Devin Steidler. UMary 6, SMSU 3.

165: Kegen Fingalsen wins by fall at 4:05 over Austin Eichmann. UMary 6, SMSU 9.

174: Phillip Springsteen wins by major decision (11-2) over Nick VonRuden. UMary 10, SMSU 9.

184: Lance Jarrett wins by fall at 5:57 over Dru Kuchenbaker. UMary 16, SMSU 9.

197: Griffin Osing wins by decision (5-2) over Ryan Stottler. UMary 16, SMSU 12.

285: Gerardo Jaime (Mary) over Andrew Petersen (TB-1 3-2). UMary 19, SMSU 12

125: Nate Humann wins by tech fall 30-15 at 6:18) over Ben Emrich. UMary 24, SMSU 12.

133: Tate Barnhardt wins by decision (6-1) over Brock Buysse. UMary 27, SMSU 12.


Minot State 29, SMSU 12

MINOT, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-6, 1-7 NSIC) fell to Minot State (5-9, 2-5 NSIC) 29-12 on Saturday afternoon.

SMSU won three bouts on the night with the first victory coming with Cortez Arredondo at 157, to extend his 7-0 undefeated conference record with a win by fall at 5:59 over Max Miller.

Dru Kuchenbaker and Griffin Osing each earned a decision victory for the remainder two victories in the dual. This afternoon’s victory for Osing was his second consecutive conference victory.

133: Oscar Nellis won by decision (5-0) over Brock Buysse.

141: Jered Sublet won by fall at 6:20 over Jordan Biehn.

149: Tanner Crissler won by major decision (13-4) over Justin Haneke.

157: Cortez Arredondo won by fall at 5:59 over Max Miller.

165: Nathan Baca won by fall at 6:26 over Kegen Fingalsen.

174: Dru Kuchenbaker won by decision (4-3) over Tony Raupp.

184: Griffin Osing won by decision (3-2) over Keegen Berry.

197: Je-Mario Jones won by major decision (12-4) over Nick VonRuden.

285: Jordan Will won by decision (2-1) over Andrew Petersen.

MSU 29, SMSU 12

SMSU will now have two weeks to prepare for the 2019 NCAA Super Region 3 Tournament in Moorhead on Feb. 23.
