SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU sweeps BSU to end weekend play
BEMIDJI - The Southwest Minnesota State Volleyball team ended its weekend road series with a sweep of Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon at the BSU Gymnasium.
SMSU (12-5, 7-2 NSIC) defeated (5-12, 2-7 NSIC) with a collective .333 team hitting percentage. Taylor Reiss and Sarina Smith tied to record match-highs of 14 kills, with Smith accounting for a .591 hitting percentage. Reiss also accounted for a match-high 17 digs.
Emma Thomssen paced the Mustangs with 45 assists in the sweep.
The Mustangs called a timeout in the first set trailing 9-7 which sparked a 5-0 run as the Mustangs took an 12-9 advantage as Angela Young accounted for five of her nine kills in the first set. The Beavers rallied with a 6-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. The set went point for point until the Mustangs could pull away from a 23-23 set with two kills from Reiss.
The Mustangs jumped into the lead early in the second set and never looked back to take set two, 25-15. The Mustangs went on an 8-1 run which gave them a ten-point cushion and continued to capitalize on their advantage.
The Mustangs went down 8-4 in set three before a 6-0 run to take an 10-8 lead. After the match was again tied at 18-18, the Mustangs sparked a 5-0 run to gain a 23-18 lead to go on to win set three 25-19.
The Mustangs (12-5, 7-2 NSIC) host Minnesota Duluth (13-3, 7-1 NSIC) on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. match against St. Cloud State (9-5, 5-3 NSIC) on Saturday to conclude homecoming weekend festivities.
