SMSU VOLLEYBALL: No. 12 Mustangs bounce back with sweep against Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON – The 12th ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team returned to the win column on Friday night with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-18 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Minnesota Crookston at Lysaker Gym.

SMSU, which improves to 11-5 overall, 6-2 NSIC, finished the night hitting .305, while limiting UMC to a .128 hitting percentage.

SMSU is now 33-1 all-time versus UMC and have won the last 25 meetings since suffering its lone loss in the series in 2003.

Taylor Reiss paced the Mustangs with a match-high 23 kills, while hitting .321. Meg Schmidt racked up 10 kills with a .444 hitting percentage, while Angela Young closed the match with eight kills

Emma Thomssen dished out 42 assists for the Mustangs, while the SMSU defense was led by Kaylee Burmeister, who recorded a team-leading 18 digs. Thomssen chipped in with 13 digs, Sydney Omtvedt added 12 digs, while Peyton Hjerleid finished with 10 digs.

Set one was tied at 8, but a kill from Young sparked a 4-0 run by the Mustangs which never trailed again for the remainder of the set. Leading 15-12, SMSU put the set away with seven straight points, highlighted by four kills from Reiss.

In the second set, with the score tied at 15, a kill by Reiss and a hitting error by the Golden Eagles gave the Mustangs a two-point lead. Holding a 17-16 lead moments later, a kill by Young, a pair of hitting errors by UMC and a kill from Schmidt, pushed the Mustang cushion to 21-16. SMSU closed out the set win with kills from Sarina Smith and Reiss and a block from Smith and Thomssen to win 25-18.

Holding a 13-9 advantage in set three, a kill and service ace by Reiss pushed the lead to six points. Following a Mustang hitting error, a pair of kills from Schmidt and a service ace by Lexi Ferrell extended the lead to 18-10 and SMSU never looked back in earing the sweep.

UMC (3-13, 1-7 NSIC) was paced by a team-high 10 kills from Deaira Gresham.

Southwest Minnesota State concludes the weekend trip today with a 1 p.m. match at Bemidji State University.
