MARSHALL – The Milroy Yankees amateur baseball team were able to get out to an early lead against the Marshall A’s on Friday night. That ended up being enough offense the Yankees needed to stay above the A’s, as Milroy earned a 1-0 victory at Legion Field.

The top half of the first inning for the Yankees was quick as they went 1-2-3, which brought up the A’s to the plate. The A’s got things started when Jordon Kontz was walked before advancing to second base with two outs. Marshall couldn’t make anything of the inning, though, ending the inning leaving Kontz on base. Going into the second inning neither team could connect on any hits and left the second inning still scoreless.

After a two-inning drought, the Yankees brought some heat to the plate in the top of the third. Starting with a single from Austin Kretsch and another single from Derick Walker with one out, the Yankees had two runners on base with Brian Dolan coming to the plate. Dolan found his pitch and hit an RBI single that brought in the first run of the night, giving Milroy the 1-0 advantage going into the bottom half of the inning. The A’s couldn’t seem to connect on any pitches that came their way which led to another scoreless inning for Marshall and the Yankees went into the fourth inning with a 1-0 lead.

Milroy got another opportunity to get someone on base to start off the fourth inning with a single from Eric Dolan. Dolan’s single was the only action that the Yankees saw at the plate and that brought up the A’s. Mason Penske started off the bottom half of the inning with a single before Ryan VanMoer followed that up by reaching first base off of a Yankee error. Despite having two runners on base, the A’s couldn’t find any opportunities to score any runs and went into the fifth inning trailing Milroy 1-0.

The Yankees found themselves going 1-2-3 in the top half of the fifth inning, and the quick at-bats continued into the bottom half of the inning as the A’s couldn’t capitalize on a walk from Nate Hoeft.

Brian Dolan got the sixth inning started for the Yankees with a single, but they couldn’t find a way to bring Dolan home as Milroy still held the 1-0 lead going into the bottom half of the sixth. Penske got the home half of the inning started for the A’s with a walk which was then followed by a successful bunt from Barry Meyer, but the A’s couldn’t find a way to bring either runner home, ending the scoring threat for Marshall.

The Yankees hadn’t been able to connect for a hit since the fourth inning but quickly changed that when Riley Carpenter got up to the plate and smacked a double before Braydin Kvistero followed that up with a bunt single. With the Yankees having two runners on base, they couldn’t find another opportunity to bring a runner in to score.

The Yankees and the A’s battled at the plate to try and score runs and both teams fell short of that goal as Milroy was able to hold on in the later innings after the early score.

The Yankees will be back on the field on Sunday at Granite Falls with the first pitch at 5 p.m. while the A’s will be back in action on Wednesday at Bird Island with the first pitch being at 7:30 p.m.
