LEGION BASEBALL: Marshall, Milroy to host annual Wood Bat Classic

MARSHALL – The Marshall Legion baseball team, along with several other teams, will participate in the 18th annual Wood Bat Classic this weekend.

Marshall, Albany, Morris, Minneapolis Post 1, Willmar, Foley and Wabasso will all compete in the round-robin tournament over the next three days, with games being held at Legion Field in Marshall and Irish Yard in Milroy.

Marshall Legion coach Mitch Maxwell said the tournament wouldn’t be possible without the continued support from U.S. Bank, the Legion association and parents who help volunteer.

“First and foremost, U.S. Bank is the sponsor and has continued to be the sponsor since we’ve run this thing, so we always appreciate their willingness to continue to support the tournament. And then the Legion and their continued support; we went to a tournament in Bird Island last weekend and just talking to some of the coaches there and some Legions have chosen to not continue to support their teams,” Maxwell said. “We continue to get support from them and we really appreciate what they’re willing to do on that end. And then we put together a parent/worker schedule, so that is a big piece of making the whole weekend go really well. Our parents have always been awesome about running concessions, doing scoreboard, etc. Those are kind of your major entities; U.S. Bank sponsoring, the Legion continuing to support us and making it happen and then the parents coming together on their end.”

The tournament will also feature a new format and a few new teams, with the bracket being played in a seven-team schedule with no placement games. New teams to the tournament this year will include Foley and Albany.

“This year’s schedule is unique in that we have a seven-team schedule. In the past, Sunday has been the placement or championship games, but this year the format will change in that all of the teams that would’ve been in the A and B pool cross brackets and play each other. There’s not a true championship game but it’ll be the best records and then tiebreakers if necessary,” Maxwell said. “We’ve got some new teams in it this year as well. Foley and Albany are in the same section and I think they both lost to Pierz, so that’s some really good competition that’ll be coming in.”

Cost is $3 per day for ages 12-17 and $5 per day for adults. Under 11 years old is free. Maxwell said they’re looking forward to another weekend of good baseball and are excited to see what the teams will bring to the diamond.

“I think there will be a lot of good baseball,” Maxwell said. “I think that’s what makes this tournament continue to go; the continued support from the sponsors and the parents and then the fact that when teams come here they have a good experience and I think they like playing on two really beautiful diamonds.”
