PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall gets late scoring to take out Fairmont, 5-2

MARSHALL — Marshall defeated Fairmont 5-2 on Friday.

The Tigers got most of their production from the bottom of the lineup.

Kaleb Bossuyt doubled and scored twice in the win. Nick Macchio and Jackson Hughes each went 2 for 3 with a double. Macchio drove in a run for Marshall, while Hughes scored a run.

Kaleb Welvaert pitched 6.2 innings for the Tigers and Isaac Schmitt came in to record the final out of the game.

Marshall (6-3) hosts Waseca today in a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

MINNEOTA — Minneota defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 12-3 on Friday.

Brant Buysse got the start and struck out six over four innings. On offense, he went 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Teddy Pesch added a pair of hits and drove in two runs in the win.

Payton Hess and Jared Baartman each recorded two hits to lead RTR in the loss.

Minneota (5-3) travels to Lakeview on Monday while RTR (3-3) hosts Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove today.

MANKATO — Hutchinson defeated Marshall 7-0 on Friday as part of the Mankato East tournament at Caswell Park.

Madison Wegner went four innings from the circle, allowing five runs on three hits with six walks and a strikeout.

Maddy Penske, Shelby Versaevel and Paige Andries recorded hits in the loss.

MANKATO — Mankato East defeated Marshall 16-2 in the Tigers’ second game of the day.

Karley Polejewski gave up six runs on six hits from the circle. Morgan Radel and Kayla Polejewski each added an RBI in the loss.

Marshall (3-10) will travel to Blue Earth Area on Tuesday.

Hendricks Invite

HENDRICKS — Six teams competed at a Camden South meet in Hendricks on Friday.

Minneota won the boys meet with a 181. Three strokes back at 184 was Lakeview. Canby finished third at 191, while RTR scored 199 to place fourth. TMB did not have enough players for a team score and Hendricks didn’t have any boys golfers.

Nolan Boerboom was the boys medalist, leading Minneota to its victory with a round of 42. Mitchell Rost added a 45, with Lucas Bot finishing a stroke back at 46. Cole Myhre added a 48 to complete the team score.

Jarrett Geihl and Cole Arends led Lakeview, each carding a 44. Payton Kvistad added a 47, with Aaron Loe coming in at 49.

Jake Wagner led Canby with the second-lowest boys round at 43. Dylan Bach added a 48, with Jacob Crowser finishing at 49. Payton Viessman added a 51.

Jack Kerr carded a 46 to lead RTR, with Andrew Williams two strokes back at 48. Boone VanOverbeke finished at 50 and Chase Christensen came in at 55.

Austin Axford was TMB’s top golfer in Hendricks with a 51. Chance DeWitt came in at 68 while Brandon Hissam carded a 72.

Minneota also won the girls meet in Hendricks, totaling 201 as a team. Hendricks scored 213 to finish second. Canby came in third at 218, with RTR at 224. TMB posted a 243, and Lakeview didn’t have enough players for a team score.

Brooklyn Downing led the Vikings at 46, followed by Carolyn Hoffman at 50. Allison Citterman posted a 52, with Lauren Bowyer finisher her round at 53.

Mallary Fink led Canby with a 46, followed by Jayla Hulzebos at 49. Abi Morris added a 52, with Natalie Bach at 71.

Rylie Hess led RTR with a 53, followed by Allie Christianson at 54. Skylar Borreson came in at 58, with Ainsley Novak posting a 59.

Megan Schmitt led TMB with a 48. Kallie Benson added a 64, followed by Lily Gladis at 65 and Reilly McConnell at 66.

Lakeview’s Siranda Chitthong was the girls medalist with a round of 44. Kaitlin Fischer added a 53 for Lakeview while Shay Gregoire finished at 58.

Canby Invite

CANBY — Six teams competed at a Camden South meet in Canby on Friday.

Minneota won the boys event with Lakeview a stroke back at 172. Canby came in at 181, with Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at 189. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton fielded an incomplete team, and Hendricks didn’t have any boys golfers.

Nolan Boerboom led Lakeview at 40, with Tristan Sorenson at 42. Trent Esping added a 44 while Mitchell Rost came in at 45.

Aaron Loe carded a 40 to lead Lakeview, followed by Jarrett Geihl at 42. Payton Kvistad carded a 44, with Cole Arends at 46.

Jake Wagner posted a 40 to lead Canby, while Jacob Crowser came in at 46. Payton Viessman added a 47, with Dylan Bach at 48.

Jack Kerr and Boone VanOverbeke led RTR with 44s, followed by Andrew Williams at 48 and Chase Christianson with a 53.

Austin Axford carded a 61 to lead TMB. Brandon Hissam added a 66, while Chance DeWitte came in at 71.

Minneota won the girls meet with a 196. Canby and Hendricks a stroke back at 197. RTR finished at 214 and TMB had a score of 238.

Lakeview fielded an incomplete team.

Carolyn Hoffman led Minneota with a 48, while Laura Knutson and Lauren Bowyer each came in with 49s. Brooklyn Downing added a 50 for Minneota.

Abi Morris led Canby with a 44, and Mallary Fink was a stroke back at 45. Jayla Hulzebos carded a 51 while Kaylin Anderson finished at 57.

Skylar Borreson led RTR with a 51, followed by Rylie Hess at 52. Allie Christianson added a 55, while Ainsley Novak finished at 56.

Megan Schmitt posted a 49 to lead TMB, followed by Lily Gladis at 60. Reilly McConnell added a 63 while Kallie Benson finished at 66.

Siranda Chitthong was the girls medalist, posting a 37 for Lakeview. Kaitlin Fischer came in at 53, while Shay Gregoire added a 56.

THURSDAY

GOLF

St. Cloud Invite

ST. CLOUD — The Marshall girls golf team competed against some of the top teams in the state on Thursday.

The Tigers came away from the St. Cloud Invite with a fifth-place finish, scoring 341 as a team. Marshall finished 16 stokes behind Detroit Lakes, which won the even with a 325.

Marshall junior Olivia Peterson led the team her round of 81. Kaylee Gossen added 86, while Ana Schwarz completed the Marshall team score with an 88.

Megan Kock added a 95, while Ramsey Nelson carded a 104 in her first varsity round.

The Marshall boys golf team finished with a 12th-place score of 333 on Thursday.

There were 19 teams at the event, as Brainerd finish with the lowest team score at 309.

Spencer Ehlers finished his round at 78 to place 10th as an individual.

“I was happy with the score Spencer had today considering he was 5-over par through his first seven holes,” Marshall boys golf coach Kari Ehlers said. “He did a good job of mentally staying in the game.”

Mason Plante carded an 83 to finish second for Marshall, while Noah Puetz and Landon Frost added 86s.

Ethan VanHauwaert added an 87, while Dominik Caspers finished the round at 96.

Coach Ehlers was pleased to see some players improve their scores.

“It’s nice to see our fourth, fifth and sixth guys shaving some strokes off their scores,” she said. “Hopefully we can be clicking at the correct time as a team to go for the conference title on the 21st.”

TRACK

Davidson Invite

SLAYTON — Eleven teams competed at the Davidson Invite on Thursday.

The host Murray County Central won the boys invite with a team score of 89. Wabasso took fourth with 62 points. Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central placed sixth with 45 points, while Russell-Tyler-Ruthton tied for eighth place with 38 points.

Aaron Johnson won the 110 hurdles for MCC, finishing in 16.47 seconds. MCC’s 4×100 relay team won its race in 47.09 seconds. Tyler Winter placed second in high jump (5-8), while Ethan Swanson was second in triple jump.

Colton Taylor won the 400-meter dash for Wabasso in 52.56 seconds and also won the long jump (19-4). He finished second in the 200 (23.76 seconds). Myles Zeug took first in shot put (49-9), while Carl Swezinski added a win in discus (132-10).

WWG/RRC’s Dalton Piotter won the 1,600 with a time of 5:08.90. Nathan Runck took first in the 3,200 (10:12.90). The team’s 4×800 relay unit finished second (8:58.19).

Wabasso finished third as a girls team with 71 points, behind Southwest Minnesota Christian/ Edgerton (112 points) and Hills-Beaver Creek (78 points). WWG/RRC finished fourth with 69 points, while MCC tied for sixth place (47 points) and RTR was ninth with 19 points.

RTR took second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:52.51. Evan Swanson added a second-place finish in shot put (41-10).

SWC/E won the girls invite, totaling 112 points. Wabasso was third (71 points), followed by WWG/RRC (69 points) in fifth. MCC tied for sixth with 47 points, while RTR finished the meet with 19 points and in ninth place.

Wabasso’s Emma Salfer won the 200 (28.80 seconds) and took second in the 100 (13.81 seconds). The Wabasso girls added a win in 4×400 relay (4:21.51).

Camryn Bunting gave WWG/RRC a win in 300 hurdles (54.28 seconds), while finishing second in 100 hurdles (17.46 seconds). The 4×200 relay team took second (1:58.32). Elizabeth Wiggins added a second-place finish in high jump (4-6). Lina Vue was second in pole vault (7-0).

MCC’s Victoria Pierson took second in the long jump (13-10). Anna Mathiowetz took second in triple jump (28-10).

RTR got a third place finish from Jayda Johansen in the triple jump (28-2.5).
