MARSHALL – The Marshall A’s opened their home schedule on Wednesday night, facing the Minneota Mudhens, who were still in search of a win against the A’s in their team history. The Mudhens would get out to a strong start before hanging on in the later innings to earn their first victory over the A’s in team history, winning by a score of 14-7.
It was the Mudhens who got out to an early lead to start, as Minneota scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 advantage. The Mudhens would continue to add to their lead in the top of the second, getting a leadoff walk from Jesse Drooger and a single from Brock Buysse before Jake Leighton smashed a double that plated two runs to extend it to 5-0.
The A’s would waste little time in responding, however, getting four runs in the bottom half of the inning. After back-to-back singles from Jon Ellis and Logan Tomasek, Justin Greenwood drew a walk to load the bases with no outs, before Joe Blanchard recorded an RBI single to get the A’s on the board.
After a popout, Ryan VanMoer cut it to 5-2 on an RBI single before Nate Hoeft smacked a two-run double to make it a one- run game.
The Mudhens would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the third, getting a RBI sacrifice fly from Drooger before Beau Buysse extended their lead with a two-run single to make it 8-4. Minneota then made it 10-4 thanks to a two-run home run from Adam Durfee in the fourth.
Marshall would answer in the bottom of the fifth, as Alex Thompson reached on an error that plated two runs in the process, cutting the deficit to 10-6.
Minneota had another strong offensive inning in the sixth, getting three runs from a sacrifice fly before Drooger connected on a two-run double to make it 13-6.
The A’s then cut it to 13-7 in the bottom half of the inning, using an RBI single from Blanchard to highlight the offense.
Minneota would later add a run in the final innings to cap off the seven–run, 14-7 victory.
Danny Hennen would earn the victory on the hill while Justin Mettling took the loss for the A’s.
Marshall will be back in action on Friday against Cottonwood at 7:30 p.m. while Minneota will face Hancock at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
