SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: SMSU ready for Indoor NSIC Championships

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s and men’s track and field teams will travel to Mankato today and Saturday for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships at Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State University.

Field events will get underway today starting at 12 p.m., with track events starting at 1 p.m. The action continues on Saturday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and track events starting at 1 p.m. The team awards presentation is expected to take place at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday.

A total of 15 schools will compete for the women’s championship, while the men’s championship field will include 11 teams.

On the men’s side, sophomore Bashir Aidrus enters the championships with the second fastest time this season among NSIC runners in the 5,000 at 14.39.58 (converted) and the sixth best in the 3,000 meters (8:37.29).

For the SMSU women’s team, freshman Rebecca Manteuffel has the fourth longest toss in the weight throw amongst NSIC competitors this season at 16.61m. Senior Angela Prokosch has the sixth-best toss in the weight throw at 16.24m.

Kim Shabino enters the championships with the ninth-fastest time in the 200 meters at 25.71 (converted).

Last season, SMSU-competing in just its fourth NSIC indoor championships since 1992-finished seventh on the men’s side, while the women’s team finished 12th.

The SMSU men’s team had four All-NSIC honorees last season, including current junior Josh Behning, who placed third in the shot put.

The SMSU women’s team has not had an All-NSIC honoree at the indoor championships.
