DAWSON – The Wabasso Rabbits raced out to an 11-2 lead against the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks and never looked back. Wabasso’s fast start propelled them to their fourth straight victory as they defeated the Blackjacks 77-37.

Allison Fenger opened the scoring for the Rabbits with a layup off an offensive rebound. Alex Sather got the Blackjacks on the board with a layup to tie the game at 2-2. The Rabbits then went on a 9-0 run to open up an 11-2 lead.

“We set the tempo of the game with our pressure,” Wabasso coach Neil Dolan said. “We didn’t shoot to well at the beginning of the game. Then we hit some 3-pointers. Our press was effective. The girls worked hard.”

A Jenna Frank 3-pointer put the Rabbits up 30-8. Following Frank’s 3-pointer the Blackjacks went on a 7-0 run to make it a 30-15 game.

The Blackjacks were able to trim Wabasso’s lead to 34-21 late in the second half. The Rabbits outscored the Blackjacks 8-4 to close out the first half and take a 42-25 lead into the locker room.

“In the second half of the first half I told the girls I coached our way out of a big lead,” Dolan said. “I kept trying to stick with our half court press. They did a great job of breaking that and getting easy buckets. They did a nice job of coming back in the first half there.”

Just like they did to start the game, the Rabbits dominated the opening stages of the second half. Gina Goblirsch started the scoring in the second half by knocking down a 3-pointer. That 3-pointer started a 16-0 for the Rabbits. Frank capped off the 16-0 run with a 3-pointer to put the Blackjacks up 58-25.

“I tell the girls the first three minutes of the second half are the most important,” Dolan said. “That run was a big difference. We shot the ball pretty well and got going there. We ran the floor well.”

The Rabbits held the Blackjacks to 10 second half points to cruise to a 77-37 victory. Madison Guetter led the Rabbits with 17 points. The junior post player also grabbed nine rebounds.

Fenger finished with a double-double for the Rabbits, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

“Alison Fenger did a great job of rebounding and getting some easy baskets,” Dolan said. “She’s given us some strength inside and that’s helped a lot.”

Frank finished the game with 13 points. McKenna Nelson scored nine points.

Sather scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Blackjacks. Mary Bothun scored nine points.

With the win the Rabbits extended their winning streak to four games. They are currently 11-1 overall and will be back in action against Lakeview on Thursday.

The loss drops Dawson-Boyd to 5-9 overall. They’ve currently lost six straight. They’ll look to snap that losing streak on Thursday against Yellow Medicine East.
