FRIDAY PREP FOOTBALL: Marshall uses ground game in win over St. Peter

ST. PETER – The No. 2 Marshall football team used the wet and muddy conditions on Friday to their advantage against St. Peter, as the Tigers won with the ground game to the tune of a 37-7 victory over the Saints.

Marshall used the running styles of Jefferson Lee V and Billy Giannelli to lead the way to a 455-yard rushing night. Lee V rushed for 189 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown while Giannelli rumbled his way for 146 yards on just 12 attempts and three scores.

Quarterback Trey Lance also used his legs to aid the Tiger offense, rushing for 50 yards on eight attempts for a score. He also threw only pass attempt.

Jake Hess and Kavan Naughton led the way on the defensive end for Marshall, with both players netting four tackles. Giannelli also had three tackles as well as a safety for the Tigers while Nick Klaith added to the takeaways with an interception.

Marshall jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking a quick 14-0 lead late in the first quarter thanks to scores from Giannelli and Lance. The Tigers then added another score in the second on a four-yard carry by Giannelli with just 17 seconds left to head into the halftime break up 21-0.

In the second half, Marshall opened the third quarter with a bang, with Lee V scoring on the first play from 60 yards out to push the Tigers’ lead to 28-0. Marshall would later add another run midway through the third on another Giannelli rush from seven yards out, making it 35-0 in favor of the Tigers.

In the fourth, it was the defense’s turn, as Marshall netted a safety early in the quarter to make it 37-0. St. Peter was able to get on the board in the final seconds to avoid the shutout.

Marshall moves to 6-0 on the season and will stay on the road to face Tri-City United on Friday at 7 p.m.

DAWSON – The Dawson-Boyd football team defeated Canby 32-0 on Friday.

Bentley Boike led the way for the Blackjacks with 202 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Colton Husby added 131 yards on the ground and a pair of scores. Alex Swenson completed three passes on 10 attempts for 23 yards and a touchdown to Husby through the air.

Zach Durfee led the way for Canby with 18 passing yards. Jaden Kindopp led all receivers with 12 yards.

Dawson-Boyd will hit the road this week to face YME on Friday at 7 p.m. while Canby will face Adrian at home for an early Thursday night matchup beginning at 6:30 p.m.
