SMSU VOLLEYBALL: Reiss named Sports Imports/ AVCA Player of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky.- Southwest Minnesota State junior outside hitter, Taylor Reiss, has been named the Sports Imports/ AVCA Division II National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association which was announced on Tuesday.

Reiss, who was also named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, averaged 4.0 kills per set with double-digit kills in all four matches during the Mustangs’ run to a 4-0 record and a Colorado Premier Championship win this past weekend.

Reiss, now a two-time winner of the National Player of the Week award, became just the 14th player in school history to surpass the 1,000 career kill mark in the Mustangs’ Colorado Premier Championship win over No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul. This marks the first time this year and the fifth time in program history that a Mustang volleyball player has been recognized as the National Player of the Week.

Reiss had her best match of the weekend in the championship match of the Colorado Premier, recording 18 kills, nine digs and four total blocks with one solo block to help lead the Mustangs to a 3-1 win over the defending National Champion, Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. She was also named Tournament MVP for her performances against four nationally ranked opponents (No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul, No. 8 Ferris State, No. 17 Tarleton State, No. 20 Tampa) last weekend.

Reiss has hit double-digit kills in all but one match so far this season as SMSU (8-0) is off to its best start in school history.

The Mustangs will open conference play this week when they travel to take on Augustana on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

SMSU will host its first home match of the season on Saturday as it takes on Wayne State beginning at 2 p.m.
