PREP VOLLEYBALL; Marshall gets past Luverne in three sets

MARSHALL– The Marshall volleyball team won in a sweep over Luverne Thursday night on the Tigers’ home court. The Tigers won by scores of 25-13, 27-25 and 25-23.

Marshall’s Paige Andries, Whitney Schwartz and Jordyn Hilgemann pitched in seven kills a piece for their team. Libero Mia Schnaible accumulated the most digs with her total being 19. Other Tiger teammates to assist in digs include Karley Polejewski and Maddy Marks who both had nine.

The Tigers were sharp on the line and served up 10 aces. Four of these came from Erica Jones and Madison Wegner, while two aces were dished out by Logan Sherman.

As the score may indicate, the Tigers were playing an energetic game throughout the first set of the night. It took a little time for the wheels to get rolling, but Schnaible’s jump serve did the trick and helped to earn Marshall a 20-10 lead. Luverne was not playing a strong game right away, and had a hard time guessing where Marshall’s hits were going. This coupled with the Tigers’ keen defense at the net aided in them winning the first set.

The second and third sets proved to pose more of a challenge for the Tigers, and their playing that was hot in the first set cooled off a bit. Despite the Cardinals’ comeback efforts, Marshall was able to hold off Luverne 27-25 in the second set and 25-23 in the third set.

Head coach Dan Westby commented on the game effort displayed in the last two halves.

“It was a grind,” he said. “We did things better in the first half- certainly in sets two and three we were flat.”

Even with a 3-0 win, Westby notes that there is always room for growth when building up team effort and maintaining a fighting attitude. ” Number one, we have to start fighting each other,” he said. “When things were going poorly, we ran and hid.”

Marshall will be traveling to face off against Sioux Falls Roosevelt on the 21st.
