MARSHALL – The Marshall 15U C3 boys soccer team came into their regular season finale against Fairmont with an undefeated record and just one goal allowed the entire season.

Neither of those marks would waver Tuesday night, as Marshall shut out Fairmont 8-0 to finish the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record.

The Tigers jumped out of the gate to start, as they scored a goal in the opening minutes to go up 1-0 early. Near the midway point of the first half, Marshall got another goal to go to the back of the net to push the lead to 2-0 at the halftime break.

In the second half, Marshall broke open the scoring, pouring in six second-half goals. The Tigers had entered the game with 95 team goals on the season, and looked to push their season total into triple digits. After scoring two more goals to start the second half, Marshall would achieve that mark at the midway point when Ben Schuch connected on a lined shot that found the upper left corner of the net.

The Tigers then struck for three final goals in the remaining minutes to bring it to the 8-0 final.

Marshall coach Roberto Esparza said he’s proud of the way his team has played all season and hopes they can carry their momentum into the state tournament.

“I’m proud of all the kids; they’re good players. I’ve got a pretty good team and the Marshall teams have been doing pretty good this season,” Esparza said. “We’ve got three teams qualifying and I hope we can get to state.”

Esparza said their key on the offensive end was their ability to pass the ball and spread the offense throughout the game.

“When we started the game, I told my kids to pass the ball. As soon as I told them to do it, they started to score right away,” Esparza said. “The second half I told them the same thing and I don’t know why they weren’t doing it the whole game. Sometimes you have to tell them what they need to do but they do a pretty good job.”

Marshall will face St. Peter on Sunday in Fairmont in the playoffs.
