Section 3A girls’ basketball

Lakeview 62, Lincln HI 29

Brianna Hoffman poured in 20 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists as the Lakeview girls’ basketball team stormed past Lincoln HI 62-29 Thursday in a first-round Section 3A-North tournament game in Cottonwood.

Allison Boerboom also had a strong game for the Lakers in the victory, adding 17 points. Lakeview, which led 32-19 at halftime, held a 41-23 rebounding edge on the night.

Lincoln HI ends its season at 3-19 overall. The Rebels were led Thursday by Morgan Citterman, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Heidi Pavek chipped in 10 points.

Lakeview (10-17 overall), the No. 7 seed in the sub-section, moves on to play No. 2 seed Dawson-Boyd at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Montevideo.

WWG 61, Edgerton 48

Tied with Edgerton at the half, the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls’ basketball team outscored the the Flying Dutchmen 36-23 in the second half on its way to a 61-48 win in the opening round of the Section 3A-South tournament.

Paige Erickson had a huge night for the Chargers in the victory, scoring 22 points to go with 18 rebounds and seven steals. She went 10-for-12 from the foul line.

Erickson was one of just five players to score for the Chargers in their home game Thursday, but four of those players reached double figures in scoring. Elizabeth Woelber added 13 points, Abby Herding scored 11 points with four assists, and Kelsi Wahl tallied 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Ciera Everett hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead Edgerton, which had beaten WWG 58-52 on Feb. 14.

The Chargers (11-12 overall) move on to face No. 2 seed Southwest Minnesota Christian (20-4) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Worthington.

Section 2A girls’ basketball

RRC 66, Truman 31

The Red Rock Central girls’ basketball team had no trouble getting past Truman in the first round of the Section 2A-South tournament. The Falcons had their largest margin of victory of the season Thursday while downing the Bluejays 66-31 in a home game in Jeffers.

Statistics were not available from the game.

The Falcons (4-18 overall), who are seeded eighth in the South sub-section, move on to face top-seeded Mankato Loyola (21-2) Saturday in Mankato.

Truman ends its season with a 4-21 record.

Area boys’ basketball

RTR 73, TMB 53

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton senior forward Dylan Kor scored 21 points, including his 1,000th career point, in the final home game of his career as the Knights fended off Tracy-Milroy-Balaton for a 73-53 victory Thursday night in a Camden Conference boys’ basketball game in Tyler.

Kor was one of four players to score in double figures for Class A’s fifth-ranked team. Brett Peterson added 16 points, Brett Vercruysse added 12 points, and Shay Wabeke tallied 11 points and six assists. Newt Dunblazier also had a solid night with eight points and 12 rebounds.

TMB kept it close in the first half and trailed 35-30 heading into the locker room. The Panthers were led by freshman forward Josh Kirk, who had a strong game with 18 points and eight rebounds. Parker Lanoue chipped in 10 points in the loss.

The Panthers (6-16 overall, 4-9 Camden) wrap up the regular season Monday with a non-conference road game against Redwood Valley.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (24-1, 14-0) will try to stretch its winning streak to 17 games when the Knights face eighth-ranked Dawson-Boyd tonight in the Camden Conference championship game in Dawson. The Knights defeated the Blackjacks 74-69 in a regular season game on Jan. 24 in Dawson.

Ortonville 59, Canby 56

Jade Hasslen hit six of Ortonville’s 11 3-pointers and scored a team-high 20 points to lead the Trojans to a 59-56 overtime victory over Canby Thursday in a non-conference game in Ortonville.

Ortonville (12-10 overall) led 26-24 at the half and the two teams were tied at 48 at the end of regulation in what was the final regular season game for both squads.

Canby’s Zach Nuy led the Lancers (18-6) in both scoring (22) and rebounding (6) in the losing effort. Cole Brusven hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points. He also grabbed five rebounds, dished out five assists and got three steals.

The Lancers, who dropped their last two games of the regular season, are the No. 3 seed in the Section 3A-North playoffs. They begin the tournament March 2 when they face the winner between No. 6 seed Lakeview and No. 11 seed E.C.H.O. Charter School at 4 p.m. in Montevideo. Ortonville, the fourth seed in the tournament, plays No. 5 seed Minneota at 12:30 p.m. the same day, also in Montevideo.

Up six at the half, the Minneota boys’ basketball team kicked into high gear in the second half to blow out Lincoln HI 70-40 Thursday in a Camden Conference game played in Minneota.

Aaric Christenson had a strong night for the Vikings with 22 points and seven assists. Dan Harrison added 17 points and six rebounds, and Grant Hennen tallied 11 points and nine boards.

Lincoln HI’s Jordan Beck did most of the scoring for the Rebels Thursday, hitting 9 of 16 shots from the field for 24 points. He also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Minneota (14-8 overall, 8-7 Camden) opens play in the Section 3A-North tournament March 2 in Montevideo against Ortonville.

Lincoln HI ends its regular season 6-15 overall and 4-10 in the conference. The Rebels host Renville County West Feb. 28 in the first round of the 3A-North playoffs.

Five Dawson-Boyd players reached double figures in scoring as the Blackjacks blew by Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 93-21 Thursday in a Camden Conference game played in Kerkhoven.

Dawson-Boyd’s Michael Lee had a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Nathaniel Huot hit four 3-pointers and added 17 points, while Noah Stelter scored 14, Jess Hansen scored 13 and Joey Lee tallied 11 points.

Dawson-Boyd had 45 rebounds in the game, including 18 offensive rebounds. KMS had 18 total rebounds and was led in scoring by Jacob Zvorak, who had 11 points.

The Blackjacks led 66-6 at halftime.

Deuel (S.D.) senior guard Lincoln Swenson poured in eight 3-pointers and a game-high 34 points as the Cardinals defeated Canby 91-81 Tuesday night in a non-conference border battle in Canby.

Deuel’s Curt Boeke and Brent Krause each added 13 points for the Cardinals, who won their seventh straight game and improved to 17-3 overall.

Michael Slaba had a big game of his own for the Lancers, scoring 23 points to go with six rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Nate Stafki hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points, while Cole Brusven knocked down four 3s and scored 14 points. Zach Nuy added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Lancers.

Canby drops to 18-5 overall after the loss and will take on Ortonville Thursday in the Lancers’ regular season finale in Ortonville.

Shane Buchman used three of his team-high 20 points to help his Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers force overtime with Red Rock Central in a Red Rock Conference boys’ basketball game Tuesday in Lamberton. The 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation knotted the game at 50-50, but unfortunately for Buchman and the Chargers, the Falcons pulled away in the extra session for a 62-53 win.

Alex Knutson joined Buchman in double figures, scoring 18 points for the Chargers. WWG trailed 28-20 at the halftime break.

Jeff DeCock poured in a game-high 24 points, including 10 of 14 free throws, for the Falcons, while Sam Price drained five 3s for 15 points to join DeCock in double-figures. Henry Rogotzke chipped in with six points, 17 rebounds, five assists and four blocks.

The Falcons (13-9 overall, 8-6 Red Rock) host Fulda on Friday in their next contest, while the Chargers (8-14, 4-10) return to Westbrook to host Southwest United the same night.

Class A’s fifth-ranked squad extended its win streak to 15 games Tuesday as the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys’ basketball team powered past Pipestone Area 70-44 in a non-conference game played in Tyler.

Dylan Kor racked up 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Knights, who are now 23-1 overall. Brett Peterson added 19 points and six assists, and Brett Vercruysse chipped in 14 points.

The Knights were 24-for-27 from the foul line, with Peterson making all 12 of his attempts.

Pipestone’s Boyer Bouman was the only Arrow who scored more than six points in the game. He finished with 17.

The Knights will try for their 16th straight win Thursday when they host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in a Camden Conference contest.

Isaac Heard scored 24 points and teammate Brett Ford added 12 as the Edgerton boys’ basketball team took down Murray County Central 82-67 in a Red Rock Conference game Tuesday night in Slayton.

Heard also had 11 rebounds in the game, and he and Ford combined to go 18-for-24 from the foul line.

MCC got a solid game from Logan Kluis in the losing effort. He scored a team-high 22 points and also had 11 rebounds. Sam Erickson hit three 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Cole Bly added 10 points.

Lincoln HI 60, Edgerton 55 (2OT)

The Lincoln HI girls’ basketball team capped off its regular season in thrilling fashion Tuesday, coming back from a five-point halftime deficit and earning a 60-55 double-overtime victory over Edgerton in a non-conference game in Edgerton.

The Rebels, who got their second straight win and third of the season, were led by Morgan Citterman, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Bucholz added 13 points.

Lincoln HI hit a season-high nine 3-pointers in the game. Alex DeSmet had a big hand in that, connecting on four of them for 12 points.

Edgerton (4-19 overall) was led by Sarah Post, who hit three shots from beyond the arc and finished with 13 points. Tanner Gunnink added 10.

The Rebels will try to build off their momentum in the playoffs, which they begin Thursday. Lincoln HI is the No. 10 seed in the Section 3A-North tournament and will play No. 7 seed Lakeview at 7 p.m. Thursday in Cottonwood.

A second-half comeback attempt by the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls’ basketball team fell just two points short in Tracy on Tuesday night as the Panthers fell to the Springfield Tigers 52-50 in non-conference action.

Cassie Hook scored 14 points to lead the Panthers, who trailed 29-23 at halftime. Jenna Stoneberg chipped in with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Sammie Gervais scored 10 points as the final Panther to reach double figures in scoring.

Jordan Salonek was the only Tiger to reach double digits in scoring with 10 points. She also added six rebounds, three assists and seven steals. The Tigers (14-10 overall) had five players score at least eight points in the win.

TMB (12-12) travels to Madison on Saturday for its next game as the Panthers, seeded fifth in Section 3AA-North, tip off the postseason against the Lac qui Parle Valley Eagles.

Up two on Flandreau at halftime, the Elkton-Lake Benton offense stalled in the third quarter and was held to just two points as Flandreau earned a 44-33 win in a first-round game of the District 5A tournament Tuesday in Elkton, S.D.

Makayla Dietrich scored 20 points to lead Flandreau (7-14 overall) to the victory. Her squad moves on to face top seed Madison in the district title game Thursday in Tea, S.D.

The Murray County Central girls’ basketball team nearly capped its regular season with a big upset over Southwest Minnesota Christian, but instead it ended up being just a close call.

SWC rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to grab a 67-62 victory over MCC Monday in Slayton to finish with a perfect 16-0 record in the Red Rock Conference.

Hannah Van Dyke and Amber Pater both had big nights for the Eagles. Van Dyke scored a game-high 22 points, and Pater scored 21 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career.

MCC’s Jade Giese had 16 points, four steals and three assists in the losing effort. Taylor Schreier added 14 points, Jenna Ness tallied 12 points and seven rebounds, and Morgan Behrends just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Rebels finish the regular season with a 9-11 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the Red Rock Conference. They will open the Section 3A-South tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday against Adrian in Worthington.

The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls’ basketball team ended the regular season on a high note Monday night thanks to a strong second half against Mountain Lake Area.

Down nine at halftime, the Chargers outscored MLA 36-16 in the second half to pull away with a 56-45 victory in a Red Rock Conference game in Westbrook.

Paige Erickson had 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, five steals and three blocks to lead the Chargers to victory. Elizabeth Woelber added 11 points, and Dayna Comnick tacked on nine points and seven rebounds.

The Lincoln HI girls’ basketball team scored its season high Monday in a 76-9 win over E.C.H.O. Charter School in a non-conference game played in Ivanhoe.

KaLea DeSmet had a solid game on both ends of the court for Lincoln HI, scoring 14 points and also getting nine of her team’s 26 steals.

Heidi Pavek added 11 points for the Rebels, Alex DeSmet tallied 10 points and five steals, and Morgan Citterman had six points and 11 rebounds.

Kristin Gladis scored four points to lead the Rockets.

Lincoln HI (2-19 overall) plays another non-conference game today at Edgerton, while E.C.H.O. Charter will open play in the Section 3A-North tournament Thursday at Ortonville.

Guards Nathaniel Huot and Joey Lee combined to score 49 points to help lift the Dawson-Boyd boys’ basketball team over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 69-66 Saturday at the West Central/Camden Challenge in Renville.

Lee hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points for Dawson-Boyd, Class A’s ninth-ranked team. He also had eight rebounds before fouling out. Huot drilled four 3-pointers and scored 23 points, also tallying four assists and three steals.

Sophomore forward Michael Lee posted a double-double for the Blackjacks with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

ACGC (14-9 overall) got 21 points from Taylor Larson, who connected on five 3-pointers. Jacob Belgum added 17 points in the losing effort.

The Canby girls’ basketball team capped off its regular season with a lock-down defensive effort Saturday against Lincoln HI, holding the Rebels to just seven made field goals in a 49-14 win in a Camden Conference game in Canby.

Ricki Kallhoff had 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the Lancers, who led 27-8 by halftime. Brandi Merritt hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points, while Morgan Merritt tallied seven points and eight assists.

Maranda Jerzak made four of Lincoln HI’s seven field goals for eight points.

CM/C’s leading scorers were Sam Pendleton with 24 points and Zach Kerkhoff with 20 points. CM/C had the edge with 26 points to Wabasso’s 21 at halftime. Despite shooting at only 40 percent from the free throw line, the team managed to stay ahead in the second half.

The Canby Lancers overtook the Lakeview Lakers 44-33 in Friday’s game in Cottonwood. The Lancers’ leading scorer for the night was Morgan Merritt with 19 points. The team was also helped by Brandi Merritt, who chipped in three assists and three steals. Richelle Kallhoff totaled five blocks during the game to keep the Lancers ahead.

The Lancers had a solid 27-18 lead over Lakeview by halftime. The Lakers recieved support from Corbyn Wee, whose 11 points, four steals, and two blocks helped keep them in the game. Allison Boerboom contributed ten points, and Brianna Hoffman had 11 rebounds and two blocks.

The Minneota Vikings took home a 68-28 win against Pipestone in Friday’s game in Minneota. Taylor Reiss put 29 points towards the winning effort, with an additional ten rebounds and three steals. The Vikings’ Shelby Corbin was also in good form, adding three steals and three points. Payton Boerboom contributed six of the team’s 20 assists.

Minneota led the Pipestone Arrows 42-12 by halftime. Kelly Nettik added eleven points towards Pipestone’s score, and Megan Remund contributed four.

Ellen Franta’s 3-pointer with a minute left gave the Wabasso Rabbits the lead, while her teammates held on for a 55-50 Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball win over Cedar Mountain/Comfrey in Morgan on Friday.

Franta scored seven points in the win while dishing out a team-high seven assists. Kimberly Frank paced the Rabbits with 14 points, while Chelsey Guetter and Larissa Rohlik each chipped in 11. Rohlik added three steals, while Guetter pulled down nine rebounds and had a pair of blocks.

Haley Weidman led CM/C with 17 points, while Andrea Ochs and Brianna Lund went for 13 and 11 respectively.

With the win, the Rabbits end the regular season with a 23-2 overall record and the best marks in the conference at 15-1. Wabasso also enters section playoffs as the No. 1 seed in Section 3A-South after winning 15 straight games. Paynesville was led by Ericka Schlangen, who hit three 3-pointers and scored 19 points. Brooke Wuertz added 13 pints in the win.

Kaylie Nielsen hit a tough shot in the lane to put her team up a point and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton missed on a pair of opportunities in the waning seconds as Russell-Tyler-Ruthton held on for a 52-51 victory over the Panthers Thursday night in a Camden Conference game played in Tracy.

Nielsen had 11 points in the game, while teammate Destine Strand led the charge for the Knights with 14 points and five rebounds. Shayna Possail and Janel Wichern each finished with nine points for RTR, which shot just 7-for-19 from the foul line.

Sammie Gervais had a strong game for the Panthers in the losing effort. She finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Cassie Hook chipped in 14 points for TMB.

RTR (15-8 overall, 10-4 Camden) opens the Section 3A-South tournament Feb. 23 against Fulda. TMB (11-10, 7-6) still has two games left in the season. The Panthers play at Redwood Valley today and finish the season Tuesday with a home game against Springfield.

The Dawson-Boyd girls’ basketball team wrapped up its regular season by avenging one of its two losses during the year by defeating Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 45-38 Thursday night in a Camden Conference game in Dawson.

It was a slow start for both teams, as the game was tied 14-14 at the half, but Dawson-Boyd won the second half 31-24 to capture the win.

Mari Lee finished with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals to pace the Blackjacks. Justine Lee added nine points, seven assists and five steals.

KMS got seven points and 11 rebounds from Samantha Dunn in the losing effort.

The Blackjacks (21-2 overall, 14-2 Camden) begin the Section 3A-North tournament Feb. 23 and will play the winner between Lakeview and Lincoln HI.

In a preview of an early round matchup in the section 3A playoffs, the Adrian Dragons took advantage of a sluggish first half by Murray County Central to pick up a 53-38 Red Rock Conference girls’ basketball win in Adrian on Thursday. The Dragons led 27-16 at halftime.

Courtney Vaske scored a team-high 11 points for the Dragons, while Brooke Wensel chipped in with 10 points.

The Rebels were led by Jenna Ness’ eight points. No MCC player broke double figures scoring, although Morgan Behrends, Taylor Schreier and Jade Giese each scored six points in defeat.

A stout defensive effort by the Lakeview boys’ basketball team helped the Lakers outpace the Central Minnesota Christian Bluejays in a Camden Conference game Thursday in Cottonwood. The Lakers committed just six fouls while holding the Bluejays to 44 points in a 61-44 win.

Spencer Larsen led the Laker offense with 19 points, while Derek Larsen added a 15-point, 10-assist double-double to the winning cause. Jonah Dovre had a team-high nine rebounds and four blocks in the win.

Mountain Lake Area closed out a 14-point deficit with only seven minutes left in Tuesday night’s game against the Red Rock Falcons. The team managed a 65-54 victory with a total of 34 rebounds.

Carter Kirk led Mountain Lake with a total of 21 points. The team also saw 14 points contributed by Josiah Stoesz and 10 points by Andrew Hempeck. This win puts the Mountain Lake Wolverines at 18-3 overall and 12-0 in the Red Rock Conference.

RRC’s Henry Rogotzke was the night’s top scorer with 27 points and two blocks. Jeff DeCock also played a solid game, adding 16 points to the score, plus three assists and two steals.

Behind five players in double figures, the Springfield Tigers picked up their sixth win a row while simultaneously handing the Wabasso Rabbits boys’ basketball team its fifth consecutive loss, as the Tigers stretched a 35-27 halftime lead into a 72-62 victory in Wabasso on Tuesday.

Tanner Bock pulled down 16 rebounds to go with his 11 points for a double-double, while Seth Guetter connected on three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points for the Rabbits. Wabasso was led offensively by Neil Eichten’s 26 points.

Control of the glass meant control of the game for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls’ basketball team in Tyler on Tuesday night, as the Lady Knights used a 44-25 rebounding advantage to secure a 64-36 Camden Conference win over Lincoln HI.

Kaylie Nielsen led the Lady Knights with eight rebounds and a team-high 15 points. Leslie Willert also reached double figures with 14 points, while also recording two blocks. Shayna Possail added eight points and four assists in the win.

Lincoln HI (1-17 overall, 1-11 Camden) was led by Morgan Citterman’s 11-point, seven-rebound effort. Maranda Jerzak and Heidi Pavek each chipped in with eight points, though Pavek added four assists and four steals.

A torrid first half sparked the sixth-ranked (Class A) Minneota Vikings to a 77-29 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over the Edgerton Panthers in Minneota on Tuesday.

The Vikings led 49-15 at halftime and were paced by Taylor Reiss’ 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. Emily Stienessen and Shelby Corbin each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers on their way to 12 and 10 points, respectively. Megan Larson chipped in seven points, four assists and four steals in the winning effort.

Tanner Gunnink scored 10 points for the Panthers (3-17 overall), but was the only Edgerton player to reach double figures in the game.

Minneota improves to 21-2 on the season after recording its eight consecutive win. The Vikings are back in action on Thursday for a Camden Conference road game against Lincoln HI.

Defense reigned, but the Lincoln HI Rebels prevailed in a 35-34 Camden Conference boys’ basketball win over the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers in Ivanhoe on Thursday.

The Rebels (6-12 overall, 4-8 Camden) recovered from a 19-11 halftime deficit in the game and were led by Jordan Beck’s 18 points. Beck also had six rebounds in the win.

Parker Lanoue had nine points and six rebounds to pace the Panthers, who dropped their third game in a row.

Lincoln HI, which travels to Edgerton to face the Edgerton Panthers on Tuesday, shot 34 percent from the field for the game.

TMB (5-13, 3-6) faces No. 5 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton tonight in Tracy after shooting 33 percent on Thursday.

Strand also added six rebounds and three steals to the RTR cause. Janel Wichern was the only other player in double figures with 10 points. Leslie Willert chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and a block.

Pipestone (1-19 overall) was led by Amanda Haupert’s nine points and has lost 18 consecutive games.

WWG’s Paige Erickson had a big game herself. She made 10 baskets and scored 25 points to go with five steals. Teammate Kelsi Wahl added 13 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s connected on 10 3-pointers en route to an 80-52 win over Wabasso in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game played Thursday in Sleepy Eye.

The win was the Knights’ seventh straight. They improve to 13-3 overall and 9-2 in the conference. SESM defeated Wabasso 69-67 Dec. 17 in Wabasso.

Kansas Adams knocked down four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Knights. Sean Mathiowetz also scored 22 for SESM.

Tanner Bock had a big game for Wabasso in the losing effort, scoring a team-high 18 points and grabbing 19 of the squad’s 32 total rebounds. Rabbit guard Neil Eichten chipped in 13 points, five assists and four steals.

The Rabbits (8-10 overall, 5-5 Tomahawk) will look to get back on track Monday when they host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Conference contest.

The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers were unable to complete the comeback on Thursday, falling to the Luverne Cardinals 69-62 in a non-conference boys’ basketball game in Tracy. The Panthers (5-11 overall) trailed 38-24 at halftime, and received 13 second-half points from senior guard Parker Lanoue while trying to pick up a come-from-behind victory.

Lanoue was one of three Panthers to break double digits scoring against Luverne, and finished with 13 points. Alec Swan led TMB with a game-high 19 points, while freshman Josh Kirk chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Josh Slieter paced the Cardinals scoring effort, pouring in 17 points, while Matt Arends added 14. Brett Heronimus put up eight pounds and pulled down 11 boards in the win.

TMB will be back in action on Monday as the Panthers host the Windom Eagles.
