Addressing the Sons of Norway

I was recently asked to speak at a meeting of a secret society. I was surprised when they invited me as it’s widely known that I can’t keep a secret. My wife and I went to an innocuous building located in the midst of a sleepy college town. We descended a set of concrete stairs that led ...

Hospitals should continue to build strong community ties

Hospitals have been a major part of Minnesota’s statewide news in the past few weeks, as both large and small facilities adapt to changing times. The news about Hennepin County Medical Center and Sanford is a major development. There have also been articles about smaller facilities in places like Madelia in south central Minnesota and Virginia on the Iron Range. Health care has seen vast changes in the past 20 years. It’s become more expensive with higher insurance premiums and higher out of pocket costs. It’s also become more corporate. There are far fewer municipal ...

Think twice, look twice for summer safety

The long-awaited summertime is here. We hope you are getting plenty of chances to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and warm temperatures. Yet this wish comes with a word of caution. Because we’re often more active and out and about during the summer, we face the risk of seasonal injuries and illnesses. I’ve just completed my second year majoring in journalism and political science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. I've lived in Marshall all my life, and I'm excited to come back and do work in reporting in my hometown. In my free time I like going swimming, watching scary movies and camping. But winter is where I'm in my element, as it's prime time to go snowboarding, skating or snowmobiling. Hopefully this winter will have the weather for it. I actually didn't ...

The Mandalorian adventure

My first movie theater experience happened when my three older sisters let me tag along to see the flick Yours, Mine and Ours. Not the 2005 version starring Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo. I may have been a late bloomer, but I wasn’t that late. I mean the movie that featured silver screen legends Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball. That flick premiered in 1968, which means that I was 10 years old. My iPhone calculator tells me that this was 58 years ago. I can’t be that old! Besides, my wife is constantly saying that I act like a juvenile. Yours, Mine and Ours is the story of a widower ...
