On the Porch

The Lyon County Museum is allowed to reopen on Monday. The museum had to close on Nov. 21 due to MN Executive Order 20-99 and remain close under MN Executive Order 20-103. The museum hours for the month of January are: Monday-Friday: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday noon-7 p.m. The holiday decorations and trees will stay up through Jan. 30.

The second floor exhibit gallery, “Making Lyon County Home” will be open to visitors. A grand opening celebration will occur later. LCHS has been working on renovating the former library children’s department since January of 2019 for the exhibit gallery. The exhibit was funded in part by a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant. For more information on the legacy grant and the project, visit our website at www.lyoncomuseum.org under Exhibits.

About the exhibit: What makes Lyon County Home? Explore how families and neighbors went about making Lyon County Home after World War II to present through stories, artifacts, and photographs. Below is a narrative from one of the interpretive signs in the exhibit:

“Not What We Give But What We Share: The Study Clubs”

“Most Lyon County towns had their own women’s Study Club, and many remain active to this day. The Balaton Study Club funded their city’s new street signs and, a few years later, they led the way on installing accessible sidewalk ramps. Study Clubs volunteered thousands of hours of service. They led community projects, raising money for students, women’s shelters, and food shelves. The study clubs also sponsored presentations on a range of subjects. The 1973-74 Current News Study Club asked members to “strive to touch and to know the great common human heart of us all.”

The photograph featured this week shows a picture of a scrapbook in the Lyon County Museum’s collection. The scrapbook belonged to the Balaton Study Club. As indicated in the scrapbook, the club was organized in 1926. This scrapbook contains materials dated from 1927-1967.
