On the Porch

The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on December 2, 1921:

Mr. C.A. Tweet, who for the past six months has been manager of the Manhattan Oil Company’s filling station in this city, and Miss Isabelle Boudreau, a Green Valley young lady were united in marriage at the later place November 24.

On Monday, November 21st, the telephone girls of the local Northwestern Telephone Company entertained at a shower at the O.W. Pangburn home in honor of Miss Jean Link, whose marriage to Merle L. Potter took place at Sioux Falls, S. Dakota, on Wednesday, November 23rd. Miss Link was the recipient of many beautiful pieces of Pyrex-ware and other gifts.

Vera Hoff was operated on for appendicitis at the Marshall Hospital on Thanksgiving Day. She is reported as doing nicely at this time.

Mr. C.A. Swanson and family moved from their farm into Marshall Thursday. Mr. Swanson has bought the Dibble house.

A sale of the livestock and personal farm property is advertised by Nelson Marcotte & Son on the Marcotte farm north of town on Monday, December 5. A list appears in ad in this issue.

Miss Myrtle Thomas and Mr. John Wild, local young people were united in marriage November 23 at Sibley, Iowa.

The Marsh 5 to 15c Store opened for business last Saturday and the store was visited by large crowds of early Christmas shoppers throughout the day.

The Lyon County National Bank have one of the first attractive Christmas windows for the season, introducing in an effective manner their Liberty Bell savings banks.

The photograph featured this week from the museum’s collection was taken on Main Street in Marshall during Christmas time in the late 1920’s.

The Lyon County Historical Society (LCHS) is a non-profit, member-supported organization. LCHS operates the Lyon County Museum at 301 W Lyon St in Marshall.
