Pedal for a Purpose

On a normal day the YMCA serves approximately 800-1,200 people for membership, programs, meetings and events. It is easy to assume users are a homogenous group with a similar goal that centers on personal wellness. Reality is that although there are certain commonalities; the individual aspirations and purposes of these guests are unique and diverse. The wide variety of ways in which the Y is able to serve individuals, families and the community is our strength. This flexibility to remain responsive to ever changing community needs is also a large part of why the YMCA has thrived as an organization for 175 years.

In the coming weeks YMCA staff, board members and community volunteers will once again launch the Annual Y Partners Campaign. As a charitable, Christian nonprofit our mission is to make the Y facility and services available to all and Y Partners makes this possible. Simply put, the community provides financial resources to the Y so we can provide for the diverse needs of local residents who need a hand up at this time in their lives. It is a process repeated millions of times at YMCAs across the country. Altruistic individuals, businesses and foundations provide access through financial support which in turn provides for the needs of all; creating equity and enhancing our way of life. The Y strengthens the Marshall area through physical, social, and mental health, education and training, a community hub for events and activities, a safe space where youth can learn values and build self-esteem, an organization that values and promotes diversity and inclusion, and most importantly, a charity that partners with the community to ensure that nobody is turned away from these opportunities because of their financial situation.

This year we are adding a wellness based fundraising event called Pedal for a Purpose. This team cycling event on Feb. 29 will feature 30 3-person teams riding through 6 musical segments which feature an Epic Movie Mash Up, Singalong Songs, Pop Culture, Throwback Songs and a sample of our normal RPM class offering. It promises to be high energy, party atmosphere that supports two great causes.

The YMCA is really excited to partner with the Mustang Market at SMSU. Pedal for a Purpose will support students’ basic needs at the permanent food and resource pantry which is located within the Center for Civic & Community Engagement at SMSU. Food and other products dispensed to students are free and meant to supplement their limited budgets while at SMSU. The Mustang Market is a wonderful new resource for the students and our goal is to assist the market financially while building community awareness for ongoing support of students who call Marshall their home.
