Well, here we go again. It’s the beginning of a new school year which invites us all to learn something.
For you parents with children going back to school, I can hear you taking a few deep breaths to calm yourselves. A new learning year not only has classroom teaching, but also includes sports, music, theater and speech events to name a few.
Speaking from personal past experience, it got a bit hectic now and again, but it was so rewarding. We parents got to watch our children expand and develop all types of passions. Yes, at times, the family schedule got crowded, but so what? Our kids were teaching us how they involved themselves in their wishes at the time. Great times.
Before I continue, maybe it’s time for a glass of Barefoot Riesling. It will help to sweeten the moment with its soft sweet tastes of oranges and honey. And on the plus side, it is a very reasonably priced wine. I learned about this wine a long time ago.
As you certainly know, we humans learn from our first breath, and, hopefully, to our last breath. First, our parents taught us. Then the teaching came from other members of our family. They passed on the learning baton to teachers. We also had mentors in our early working years. Suddenly, something kind of interesting happened.
We found ourselves in the "eaching" mode. Based on our learned experiences, we attempted to help others on their journey. Because, you see, learning is a lifelong occurrence. We learned to walk, talk, sing and whistle. We learned how to read to receive the enlightenment of past authors, philosophers and sages. Along the way, we learned what interested us, and away we went.
Excuse me, it’s time for another sip of Barefoot. Ah! Oh by the way, what I learned about wines was that you should enjoy the wine you like. Don’t let someone else tell you what to drink. Lesson learned!
Of course, not all learning moments were our favorite times. I remember all those classes of algebra, geometry, advance algebra and calculus. Uff da! Not my favorites, but this little brain did learn a few things about how numbers are important to us all through life.
It’s my hope that we all learn what makes us comfortable, and what will help to make us a better person -- a person of the human family reaching out to help others within that same family. A person who will teach civility, kindness and goodness with love as the foundation of it all. Even when faced with incivility and hatred, we must put forward our best self.
We are all in this boat of life together, and, together, we can row to a better life for all. We must learn that learning can, at times, be tough but it’s worth the effort.
May you never stop learning.
