I would like to think that most of us enjoy apple juice.
Talking about apples seems very appropriate at this time of the year. Our local apple orchards are full of hanging little balls of apple goodness. Fall is such a beautiful time of the year, and it’s filled with colors and festivities. We should always appreciate this season by stopping, looking and sensing the beauty of it.
As we know, things will get more challenging very soon because the hard season of winter will envelope us in its cold arms. However, not all hardness is bad because it’s very easy to bring together hardness and goodness. For example…
A friend of mine has been bugging me for months to hold a hard cider tasting event. Now if you know anything about hard cider, you know it is made from apples. The apples are crushed to extract the apple juice, and the juice is fermented to form hard cider. Obviously, the difference between apple juice and apple cider is that the cider contains alcohol. Thus, hard cider is formed with an alcohol content of about five percent.
Now, to the hard cider tasting event.
The attendees got to sample four different hard ciders. We tasted a Woodchuck Amber Sweet Red Apple Cider, and discussed if the beverage tasted like a sweet red apple. It was sweet and fizzy. Then we popped open a can of Woodchuck Granny Smith Hard Cider. Now, we all know Granny Smith apples can be a bit tart, but we were all surprised by the cider. It was mildly sweet, lightly tart with a delicious finish.
Alright, time to sample a Sociable Cider Werks Freewheeler Dry Cider. Yep, dry with most reviews positive -- it was uniquely dry with a crisp finish. Last, but not least, we sampled Loon Juice’s Honeycrisp Hard Cider. It’s good, and we thought it was mild with a very soft sweet finish.
Then it was time to vote for your favorite hard cider. This might surprise you, but the overwhelming majority voted for the Granny Smith Hard Cider. It was enjoyable to hear everyone’s comments, and of course, there were just a "few" peals of laughter!
An enjoyable time together! Now maybe my friend will get off my back!
