In case you don’t know it, I am a history nerd.
For a very long time, history has fascinated me. It reminds me that history made us, we make history, hopefully we leave a decent history for those to come. It’s kind of like the ingredients in a bottle of wine -- many ingredients and activities go into making the wine with the result of a special moment sipping it.
When history comes to mine for me, it means we must preserve it, protect it and present it.
In Minnesota, we preserve the history of wine by knowing that the first winery in the state began in 1973 and was the Alexis Bailly Vineyards. The vineyard sets in a beautiful rural setting, and produces many excellent wines. One of my favorites is the wineries Frontenac. It is aged in oak for a year which helps to mellow the wine’s robust blackberry taste. And by the way, the grape has been recorded surviving temperatures lower that a minus 30 degrees. A tough Minnesotan that needs to be preserved.
Now, we come to protecting history. This is critical for us to really know the how, when, what and why of our evolution. We must know the facts, and not let them get taken away from us, whitewashed or changed in anyway. We are who we are, and I like Apothic’s Rosé for what it is. Besides having a pleasant light red color, the fresh red berry and light apple flavors end with a very soft honey taste. This wine needs to be protected -- it is special just like all of our history. No one person, party, religion or government should ever have the power to only tell us what they want us to know. Protecting history is protecting ourselves against ignorance.
Finally, history should always be presented to us. Not only in schools, but also during our ongoing journeys in life. If you haven’t visited your local history center lately, plan a visit. Take in the local history objects, renderings and pictures. Again, it will tell you how your locale got to where it is today. And, when talking with other folks over a glass of your favorite wine, discuss how lucky you are to be where you are today. Presenting factual history is vital to our growth.
So that’s it folks. I could go on for quite some time about the importance of history, but will end for now. Be forewarned that you just might get a slice of history many times in the future. Why would I do that? Because history is us.
