Laying groundwork for strong start this fall

Even with most students and staff out of our buildings, summer is a busy and important season at Marshall Public Schools.

Summer learning is well underway across all grade levels, with students building connections, strengthening skills, and continuing their academic journeys.

This time of year also allows us to complete critical projects across the district. Our custodial and maintenance teams are hard at work preparing our buildings for the upcoming school year — deep cleaning, addressing repairs, and ensuring our facilities are ready to welcome students this fall. These summer months pass quickly, and their work is essential to a strong start in September.

One of the most visible improvements this summer is the reconstruction of the parking lot in front of the middle school. The aging infrastructure and deterioration of the parking lot warranted the need for an overhaul of the existing lot.

The original design, created when the building served as a high school, no longer met the safety and traffic flow needs of a middle school environment.

Since we are replacing the parking lot, there is opportunity to redesign this space to better serve students and families. The updated lot, scheduled for completion before the start of the school year, will include improved drop-off and pick-up lanes, enhanced parking, and improvements to the bike path.

These changes will not only strengthen the condition of the lot but also significantly improve safety and efficiency during busy arrival and dismissal times.

As we look ahead, we also encourage community involvement in another important area–school board leadership. This year, three of our six school board members will have terms concluding, and we are seeking individuals who are passionate about education and committed to serving our community.

School boards are most effective when members focus on the big picture: setting policy, establishing district goals, and engaging stakeholders, all with the shared goal of improving student achievement. The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education is dedicated to excellence in governance, working in close partnership with the superintendent, staff, students, families, and the broader community. Board members play a vital role in shaping district direction, overseeing policy, and advocating for public education.

To support those interested in learning more, we are partnering with Teamworks Educational Leadership Solutions to offer an informational session for prospective candidates. This session will take place on July 7 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Professional Development Room at the District Office (401 S. Saratoga). Attendees will gain insight into board roles and responsibilities and have the opportunity to ask questions before the filing period.

The filing period for school board candidacy is July 14-28, and filings can be completed at the District Office.

Thank you for your continued support of Marshall Public Schools. Together, we are building a strong future for our students and our community.
