What to bring to the HHW facility

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Lyon County for your invaluable support in recycling and properly disposing of waste (trash) over the past year. It has been our pleasure to assist not only the residents of Lyon County but also the surrounding counties, as the Lyon County Household Hazardous Waste Facility serves as a regional resource for managing household waste, including paint and various cleaning and lawn care chemicals.

We frequently receive inquiries regarding what residents can bring to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. On average, we welcome approximately 20 to 25 residents daily. The most commonly accepted item is paint, followed closely by lawn and garden chemicals and cleaning supplies, all of which can be dropped off at no charge. Additionally, we often accept non-hazardous items such as shredded paper and rigid Styrofoam, which is also free of charge. There many other items that we accept. If you are a business, please call ahead for further assistance Please call us if you have questions.

One common question we receive pertains to appliances. Unfortunately, we lack the capacity to accept appliances, including microwave ovens and larger items such as dehumidifiers, washers, and dryers, at our Household Hazardous Waste facility in Marshall. These items must be taken to the Lyon County Landfill, where a disposal fee applies. The Lyon County Landfill operates six days a week and typically processes around 30 to 40 loads of trash daily, along with 15 to 20 self-haulers delivering trash or construction debris.

West Central Sanitation remains our contracted recycling hauler and currently serves over 7,000 curbside recycling carts. Lyon County staff is available to assist residents with cart replacements if they are damaged or lack a yellow lid. We can also provide carts to residents living within city limits who do not yet have one. Our Environmental Office staff is committed to serving the community by exchanging carts during recycling weeks. Furthermore, we maintain community recycling drop-off sites located in or near all cities within Lyon County to accommodate those without curbside service, including rural residents.

The 2026 Curbside Calendar has recently been mailed out, featuring a QR code. This QR code links to a comprehensive list of acceptable recycling items. The 2026 Curbside Calendar will also be available online after the first of the year.

As a reminder, Christmas lights can be recycled free of charge at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, but they should not be placed in regular recycling. Additionally, Christmas wrapping paper is not recyclable; however, it can be reused or composted, depending on its material composition. Alternatively, please consider using other materials, such as paper or kraft bags or newspapers, to wrap gifts.

Another important note: please ensure that your recycling cart is placed out by 6 a.m. and remains until it has been emptied or until 6 p.m. We have noticed some residents retrieving their carts before collection is complete. Since we do not have assigned collection times, you may be pulling your cart in before the truck has been at your address. Delays may occur due to adverse weather or truck breakdowns. It is advisable to leave the cart out until it has been emptied. If your cart was placed out and was missed on your scheduled collection day, please contact our office the following morning, and we will ensure that your cart is emptied. Both County staff and West Central Sanitation are here to assist you in these situations.

We are grateful to hear from our residents. We receive about 20-30 phone calls a day with various questions about recycling or trash disposal.
