This organization in Marshall was formed in April of 1918. A photograph of the organization’s Charter is featured this week, and it is in the Lyon County Museum’s collection.

Ohiyesa Camp Fire Girls To Give Entertainment –Part of Proceeds to Go to Local Red Cross.

On Friday evening, December 13, the Ohiyesa Camp Fire Girls wall hold a “Nickel Social” in the lecture room of the Presbyterian church. It will begin at seven o’clock and last until the crowd is ready to go home. There will be special attractions arranged to suit both old and young. Good fishing will be provided for those who are fond of the rod and reel. This feature is especially recommended to those who are not accustomed to get anything as a catch wall be guaranteed. There will be lunch too and if the people do not know just what they are ordering from the menu, they are sure to get their moneys worth.

In connection there will be a Christmas Bazaar. This will be an opportunity for those who want to buy Christmas gifts at small prices. The small articles offered for sale will be hand made. Part of the proceeds of the entertainment will be given to the Red Cross. Altho the admission is only a nickel, patrons who want to have a real good time are advised to take with them a few extra nickels.

That the girls are catering to the tastes of both old and young and issuing a general invitation is evidenced by the following: “You are invited and all your cousins, Young and old folks by the dozens are urged by the Camp Fire Girls to meet, to have some fun and things to eat. Come Friday night by twos and threes. At seven o’clock or whenever you please.”

The photograph featured this week from the Lyon County Museum’s collection shows an image of the Ohiyesa Camp Fire Girls, Marshall, Minnesota Charter dated April 1918. Founded in 1910, Camp Fire is the first nonsectarian, interracial organization to promote outdoor experiences for girls in the United States. In 1912, the first Minnesota Camp Fire groups were organized. These groups included Blue Birds, a program for the youngest elementary school students. Founded as an organization serving girls, today, the organization is open to all young people.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! The Lyon County Museum will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1. The Lyon County Historical Society (LCHS) is a nonprofit, member-supported organization. LCHS operates the Lyon County Museum at 301 West Lyon Street in Marshall.
