Giving and getting

Would you rather give or receive?

During this time of the year, we are really focused on the aspect of giving thanks. Well, it is Thanksgiving time, so to think about being thankful is only proper. I expect each of us has a heartwarming story about being thankful for a person, a place, an occurrence or a gesture. However, as important as it is to give thanks, shouldn’t we also give thanks for getting?

As I ponder this reflective season, I try to remember those people who supported me along my rocky road of life. I try to remember the places of my life where I found peace, and how much influence they’ve had on me. I think back to the happenings of my life, who was there for me, and how those folks and many events shaped me.

Therefore, I try to be a positive influence as I wander through every day. No, that definitely doesn’t mean I’m a saint. You only need to ask the folks around me and watch them roll their eyes, and then tell you what I am really like. A human being with the same foibles and possibilities as any other human being.

So, how do we give thanks? Perhaps it’s as simple as…

A smile for someone. That simple physical gesture means that you notice the other person, appreciate them crossing your path and you wish them well.

How about a handshake for someone? Not only are you offering a personal touch, but also to let the other person know you are grateful for their presence.

Talking is an important way to show gratitude and to receive it. We never know the burden someone is carrying, and a little chat might relieve and lighten the load you or the other person is carrying.

Reading a book is an excellent way to give yourself some relief and a time to reflect on the writing skill of the author. Always be ready to receive the thoughts of a book and don’t hesitate to give a book to someone. Books can change everyone.

Don’t hesitate to give thanks. Many happenings we encounter are very brief so don’t have regrets about not noticing an act of kindness. Give and you will get kindness.

We all think about tomorrow, and that’s only proper to do so. However, let’s remember today is surrounding us and that is when you give and get. Always be thankful for the beauty around you, your friends, family, nature and the family of humans.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it is to be thankful for the gift of life. We are fragile beings, and every breath, every step taken or sight seen is precious.

One last thought and you had to know this was coming. Be thankful for your favorite wine — share a bottle and one will be shared with you in return.

May you always give and get thanks.
