The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on June 2, 1922:
Mr. C. Huisenfeldt and Mr. G. Pearcy were fishing at Dead Coon lake Friday afternoon.
The school in District No. 2 will close on Friday, June 2 with their annual picnic to be held at the M. Madden home, from 10 o’clock to 4 o’clock p.m.
A family reunion was held Sunday in Robert Mitchell’s woods on the place which has been the Mitchell home for the past fifty years. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. William Struthers and son, Mr. and Mrs. G. Struthers and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Struthers of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Charley Middleton and family; Mr. and Mrs. James Struthers, Mr. and Mrs. Powell and children; Mr. James Mitchell of Marshall; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell of Tracy; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Struthers and children and Mr. and Mrs. Alton Mitchell of Amiret and Mrs. Lindsley of Montana.
The Ghent Band played a few selections from noon until one o’clock which were very much appreciated by all. Then the big Belgian national pastime game began in which 126 bowlers took part. The 1500 people comprising of people from Jasper, Walnut Grove, Porter, Minneota and Marshall rooted for their favorites. The first prize of $35 was won by August De Sutter, Pete Sander and Ernest Rogge all of Ghent. The second prize of $25, won by Maurice Speybrocke and Henry Bot Jr., of Ghent and Henry Stein of Porter. 3rd prize of $15, by Rene Porter and Emil Van Landeheim of Minneota and Emil Van Dorpe of Ghent. The 4th of $10 by Phil De Vos of Minneota, Richard De Schepper of Jasper and Henry De Smet of Walnut Grove. The 5th prize of $5 by Pete Matthys of Cottonwood and Gus and William Maertens of Ghent. $10 was given to Jasper for being the best represented town.
The school in District No. 78 completed the term last Friday, and on Sunday all the pupils and some of the grown ups enjoyed a picnic on the shores of Twin Lakes. Ball playing, music, singing, and fishing were some of the things on the day’s program, together with a fine lunch at 6 o’clock.
Noticeable among the veterans who returned home for Decoration Day were C.P. Shepard of St. Paul, Jacob Rouse of Wyoming, Minnesota, Tom Barber of Arco and Henry Freese of Long Beach, California.
There were hundreds of fishermen at Lake Sarah last Sunday in addition to thousands of people who were picnicking and taking in the ball game, but C.C. Searle captured the prize of the day when he caught a 12 pound Great Northern pike. It measured 34 inches in length.
Mrs. Zoe Brown of Marshall finished her first course class work in art and china painting last Wednesday and will hold a display of the completed work at the Millinery Parlor on Wednesday, May 31st. Some very creditable work has been done by the class and many are hoping to continue a second course if a suitable number can be obtained for the summer months.
