Would you dance with me?
I was born with two left feet.
No, not physically! I mean I’m not very graceful on my feet. There are many things I can do, but dancing is not in my genes. I have tried a few times, and quickly retired from the effort.
Back in the day, and while attending my high school proms, I was one of the many shy boys sitting in the chairs along side the dance floor. Ask a fellow female student to dance with me? My heart would flutter like crazy at the thought of such a venture. My stomach began to churn, and I could feel my nerves igniting. So, my proms are sitting memories.
However and thankfully, there are those who can dance and enjoy the heck out of it. Sitting — again — on a river side bench, I was entertained by a fellow going through some awesome dance moves. It was enjoyable to watch him, and it even seemed a bit of envy entered my tootsies. Hey man! Thanks for the show!
Over the years, it must be noted that I’ve “danced” with a large number of wine bottles. I enjoyed the ability to spin them in my hands, and to hold them tightly as I read their labels and savored their colors, tastes and flavors. It might be a bit of a reach to call that interaction dancing, but I like to believe the wine is enjoying our time together, too.
As a matter of fact, I recently danced with a bottle of Amigo Perro Carménere. This Chilean wine is flavor filled with tastes of red cherries and has a nice dry finish. A second dance is required, and I hope the wine will accept my dance invitation.
At our weekly concert in the park, I place myself in a position so it’s possible to see the concert attendees dance to the music. It’s fantastic to see people of all ages come together and dance whatever type of dance they’re doing. Who cares if their moves will ever take them to New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts? It’s all about living in the moment and letting it all hang out.
Maybe one day I’ll have that “let it all hang out” moment. There’s always hope, right?
However, I do dance! My dancing occurs within my head as I listen to music. Obviously, that’s all mental, but my body and head do sway and swing to the music in my head. That’s a little bit of redemption, isn’t it?
Additionally, I wonder if dancing can’t be extended to all human interactions. When you talk with someone, are you not kind of dancing when you gesticulate with hands and body movements? It seems to me that there’s a rhythm being established as you wave your hands and move your head, body and feet while talking. Look for that type of “dance.” It’s all around you.
Later today I plan to dance with a bottle of Oppenheimer Krötenbrunnen Kabinett. This Rhine Riesling dances perfectly with cheese and bread. Maybe I’ll try to waltz with it.
There’s a dance within nature, too. As you stroll along your favorite pathway, watch the various birds and notice their flying dance moves. The eagles perform ballets. The swallows are into rock and roll moves. The crows are doing a nice waltz for us. The best part of their performances is that they are free! So, let’s honor their moves by watching and enjoying them for a few minutes.
In the same way, notice the dancing of the plants around you. The trees are true dancers as they sway and swing softly. Of course, there are those times when they “dance” ah … furiously! Watch out for those moves! The wind is their concert master, and gives everything and everyone plenty of opportunity to dance to differing movements. Yes, those windy moves can be a pain, but being involved is better than just sitting on the sidelines of life. Take that bit of advice from an expert in that field!
Oh, and watch the dance moves of tall grass and flowers. A field of tall grass swaying in the wind is mesmerizing. The colorful moves of flowers is so endearing.
As I mentioned, I’ve had a lot of practice at dancing with wine. That’s one dance I believe will never get tiring, and I welcome its “music” in my life. It’s a learning experience to dance with a new wine, a different cocktail or an untasted beer. To paraphrase an old orchestra leader: anda one, anda two, anda three, let the dance continue!
Perhaps one day I will dance a waltz or a samba. Who knows what surprises await us around the next corner of our journey.
Maybe life is one long dance, and we all dance in many ways. Whether it’s verbally jousting with someone, listening to music or dancing with the beauty of being able to do whatever steps we can, let’s just enjoy them. Life is too short not to have some fun!
Now, getting back to the question asked at the beginning of this column, and remember I have two left feet. Would you dance with me?
As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!
Cheers!
