Marshall Public Schools gears up for exciting New Year

As summer draws to a close, Marshall Public Schools (MPS) is eagerly preparing for the upcoming academic year. This month I’d like to share some key highlights and initiatives that families and the community can look forward to.

Elementary schools focus on reading

This year, MPS will continue implementing the READ Act, a legislative initiative updated this spring. Elementary teachers will participate in training on the Science of Reading, enhancing their understanding of how students learn to read and tailoring instruction to meet individual needs.

Math achievements

MPS is proud to announce that its students have outperformed the state average in math, according to recent state test results. This data will inform curriculum planning, instruction, and intervention strategies for the coming year.

BARR framework expansion

Southview Elementary and the Middle School are entering their second year of the Building Assets, Reducing Risks (BARR) framework, while the High School continues to refine its implementation. Originating in Minnesota, BARR helps schools use data to identify student needs and provide targeted instruction and intervention. Through this framework, students will also participate in lessons on building positive relationships and essential life skills.

New learning center

A major highlight this summer has been relocating the Marshall Area Learning Center (ALC) to the SMSU campus, now known as the “Learning Center.” The second floor houses the Marshall ALC, while the first floor hosts the SWWC Educational Learning Center. Adult Basic Education will also share space on the second floor. This collaboration with SMSU, SWWC, and MPS exemplifies community partnership and cost-effective solutions, providing a permanent home for the ALC program.

Communication and Registration

Families can expect communication from schools and teachers soon, detailing open houses, the first day of class, and other important information. Families are encouraged to complete online registration via the Parent Portal before the first day of class. For any questions regarding the start of the year, registration, or enrollment, please contact your respective schools during regular hours.

I and the entire MPS team look forward to welcoming students back and kicking off the 2024-25 school year with enthusiasm and Tiger spirit.
